I must say that I prefer the AK over the AR, but for longterm planning, the modularity of the AR system is a huge plus.

15 years from now I can pull two pins and attach the latest, greatest upper receiver assembly to my current AR lower and magazines. My AKs will still be ticking away, but I won't be able to continue to evolve with the Kalashnikov system.

I plan on investing thousands of dollars in more Glock 17s, AKs, ARs, and magazines in the next few years, but I may buy a few more ARs than I had originally planned given their modularity.

Sounds like a good idea. I've actually started to standardize both calibers and weapons. I'll be sticking with the AR/AR variants and the FAL.

Same here. My ARs and AUGs cover my 5.56 needs and FALs cover my 7.62mm needs.

Variety is great but I have been fortunate enought to own or shoot most of what's out there and I just end up selling them and go back to the above models so I decided that unless something really exceptional comes along I am cutting back my spending on new/additional rifles considerably.

And I was thinking that I was the only one that planned for long-term stuff like that .

I'm working on getting a spare gun for every one of my "go to" guns.  The spare gets put in preservative and put away, to be a backup in case I can never get a replacement for the original.

I've got a second G17 that should be in on Monday.  I need another Colt 1911, Beretta 92, and Glock 19.  I'll also get another PTR-91 and a few more uppers for my ARs.

Magazines are a given -- I've got LOADS of those for every weapon system.
