I bought a 91/30 with the intention of sporterizing it as my first attempt at real gun smithing. It looked pretty good except for the bore. I thought it was full of cosmo and gunk that would clean up, but it's darker than a bear's ass at midnight. I have cleaned it with everything including bore paste and it's not cleaned up to anything I would willing to build a rifle around. I'd like to turn down the bolt handle, bead blast and stove top park all the steel pieces. True the action and lap the bolt lugs. Add a decent glass bedded stock and scope it with a guide gun mount and EER scope. Maybe even throw a jeweled bolt on t. Talk about sow's ear! I just can't see doing all that with anything less than a nice shiney bore. If anyone can point me in the direction of a source for Mosin Nagant M39 or 91/30 surplus barrels with like new bores, I'd appreaciate it. The bluing and crown aren't important as I'm going to recrown and parkerize it. Montana, Lilja, Krieger, Pacnor or any other top of the line custom barrels are out of the question, as this is supposed to be a low buck learning experience. I don't want or need to do anything as foolish as dumping $1000 into a Mosin. Thanks! RRW |

You can get re-arsenaled 91/30's for about $60 at any number of places if you have a C+$ license. Of course, it might not have a good bore -- some do and some don't. Or you could order a Finnish M-39 for anywhere between $150 and $300 or so. Most of the bores on these rifles are pristine. Check out this site: Wholesale Guns and Ammo |
Yep, that's exactly what I did. And I got the one with the shit bore.
Really alot more than I want to put into one. If I can't find a barrel, I guess I'll make the trip to J&G and pick one out that will fit the bill. |
