| I’m looking for a backpacking gun. I’m thinking something in .44 mag. I was looking at the S&W 629. They have it in a 4” or 3” inch. I would prefer the 3” just because it is a little easier to carry, but what kind of ballistics do you get from the 3” vs. the 4”? Is this a concern? Any input would be great. Thanks in advance. |
| You might want to check out the S&W 629 Mountain Gun with the lightweight barrel, this revolver is all stainless. If you’d like something even lighter check out the S&W 329PD they both have a 4-inch barrel and the 329PD only weighs 26.5 ounces. If you’re in bear country you really want to think about carrying the revolver in a horizontal shoulder holster. |

Ihe mountain gun is a good Recommendation. If you are in need of packing a pistol which may save your life, pack one that will. Even if confronted with a bad dog I would want one shot to absolutely stop the threat. Ruger offers their Redhawk in 45 colt which will handle 'hunting' loads, another option. Whatever you decide upon, Practice with it a bit. |
