I bought a M1 Garand thru CMP about 5 years back when they were at BASF in Phoenix. It's a rack grade Springfield in the 4.3 million serial number range. I got about 400 rounds of new made PRVI 30-06 designed for use in M1 rifles and a bunch of new made en-bloc clips. Occasionally when I shoot it, the clip will eject on the 7th round taking the 8th round out with it. Thinking it was probably worn springs, I replaced every spring on the gun, including those in the trigger group. No change, it still did it with about the same frequency. So does anyone have a suggestion as to what might be my problem here? |

I would first read this Clip ejection What new clips do you have? Most old USGI clips run fine. Some new ones seem to have a lot of problems from being to rough or too right. If they are rough to the touch you can run through a tumbler to smooth them out. |

Two main causes are weak clip latch springs and bent follower rods. People force a fully loaded clip down in the magazine and close the bolt over it so they can have 8 rounds with an empty chamber so all they have to do is operate the bolt to load a round. This bends the follower rod and it causes early clip ejection. |

Been shooting the M-1 for the past 30 years. Beautiful work of art ! Just my 2 cents: ditch the new clips ! I had 5 "new" clips - two from CMP - and they all had issues with my 5 M-1 rifles (30-06 & 308). Find a few nice condition "USGI" surplus clips and try them out. I've fired approx 600 rounds so far this year using surplus clips with zero problems. YMMV |

A way to check the clip latch spring is to gently stretch the spring, then reinstall it. Then test fire it. If that fixes the problem, then you know you must replace the spring. This is a temporary solution. Get your replacement springs from Orion 7. Orion 7 is the “go to” place for Op Rod springs. All of my guns have Orion 7 springs. |

I have IH that was doing that. Replaced clip latch spring and still did it. Replaced the bullet guide and corrected it. IIRC Ammo Garand has a trouble shooting section that talks about failures. The nose of my bullet guide was not to spec. If you mic it and its under you can try peening then filing to spec and try it. I purchased a new BG in the wrap. |
