I have an all USGI (except Armscorp receiver) HRT parts, w/ an "ultra heavy" match barrel that is marked "JME 85". The barrel is blued, and one dealer at a gunshow said it looks like "blued stainless steel". Does anyone know any thing about this barrel / or history of barrels marked in this manner? It shoots tight groups, but it also has a steel bedded stock , and the FCG has had a trigger job as well, (it's feels exactly the same as my Super Match SA M1A as far as that goes). I've thought about having the barrel pulled and swapped out though for a lighter ( maybe medium profile? ) barrel that would be light enough to use for deer hunting. If I do this I'd need to know a ballpark value to place on the barrel to sell it as well. Thanks in advance for any help, God bless.

It's a Gene Barnett barrel.  Barnett barrels were typically stamped with the initials of the gunsmith for whom they were made.  So, JME 85 likely means the barrel was made in 1985 for a gunsmith with initials J M E.  The barrel material is likely 4140 steel, not stainless steel.  Gene Barnett blued his barrels back in the 1980s.  He retired in 2008.  Regarding potential resale value, a potential buyer is likely to ask what are the throat erosion (TE) and muzzle wear (MW) readings?  Like a used car, how much life does this barrel still have in it?

Thanks for the info. It looks to be shot very little. The previous owner said he fired maybe 200 rounds, and I've shot less than that. Does anyone have a tool or a lead on where I can get a good deal on one so I can check the TE and ME? Thanks again Different for your help.
