I picked up a couple of M14 GI mag pouches at the local Army surplus store. Just curious, what's the purpose of the longer strap and hook on the top rear of the pouch?

Additional support.

M1956 suspenders had metal rings at the edge of the shoulder pads. The Mag pouch straps clipped to them.

Are there any tacticool m14 mag pouches out there? All i seen are Vietnam era usgi m14 mag pouches

That tacticool stuff is ridiculously expensive! One pouch alone costs as much as a surplus belt/suspender/2 pouch set-up.
