I picked one of these up at a gun show for $2, and I'm wondering what the different parts of it are used for. I've figured out the hex wrench is for the gas nut, and the little fold down rod is to make a handle for cleaning rods. What are the other parts used for? I tried to take a close up of the small end, and took another of the end with the holes and U shape at the end. Also, what is/how much is the tool designed to specifically take apart the M14 bolt? A friend showed me how to do it with a .30-'06 shell casing, but I'm sure there is a proper method. Any help is appreciated!

I haven't ever posted pics on this site before, so if those links don't work, any help on how to upload working pics would be great.

Use the picture icon on below the message box. Not sure why I could not get them to work.

I tried to link thru photobucket, and got this:

Damn, I tried using the picture button, but it still didn't show up as anything.

ETA: I changed my photobucket to public, maybe that will make a difference...

The small end is placed in the bolt face with the "blade" part under the extractor. Twist clockwise and hang on to all the parts that will be released.

The large open end is designed to hold the brass bristle chamber brush while stored in the butt stock.

the 06 casing trick is much safer to your eye and lost parts.  Or this has just been my case.

Thanks for the replies folks. When I took apart my bolt with the .30-'06 casing, I did it inside a large ziploc bag to prevent lost parts, I'll have to try the tool the same way and see if it's any easier.

06 casing trick I knew of worked in the chamber of the rifle. IIRC you could also use the M1 tool in the chamber.

I have been wanting to take my bolt apart for sometime but am afraid I would not be able to get it back together

It's no problem at all, I did it for my first time this weekend. If you use the 30-06 shell case trick and do it inside of a ziploc bag it should be no problem. When putting the extractor back in while pushing the ejector in will require three hands, so it might be good to have a helper.
