I need some help on an M16A2 I'm interested in. This one that has me stumped as I have not seen this type of A2 before. This is a Colt Factory A2 with burst markings but it uses the large reciever pin hole, has no raised mag/receiver rib area (looks just like a normal M16 receiver) no reinforcements on the lower, the upper is junk aftermarket piece but I don't care about that. Ser# 315XXX must be a real oldie. Can anyone shed some light on this gun for me? Never seen an M16A2 before without the updates. I'm not to up on M16's anyways so maybe it's normal for the ser#/date.

Thanks

SP1 conversion?

Who called it a genuine A2? The seller?

I would need to see a pic to tell what it really is. But based on your description, the deal sounds somewhat fishy.

I would also guess a re-marked Colt SP-1 conversion gun.

We shot it today at the indoor range and it did have some FTF but I think it was from the crappy upper. The other thing was that the Burst setting ran full auto. He said that the previous owner changed out the ratchet group so it would run FA. The roll marks look nice and clean and it does have M16 A2....so how can I tell if it's a remarked conversion? Does the SER# tell us anything? I'll see if I can grab a couple pic's of it too. Anyways if it is a SP1 conversion what kind of money should it go for?

In theory if the conversion paperwork was done correctly the registration should show on it which company/person did the conversion, the receiver should also be engraved with this company/persons markings, city and state.  Sometimes as transfers happened then forms were filled out wrong and Colt was listed as the manuf. Back then often the markings were put on the receiver under the pistol grip.

I would say a conversion gun that does not work right should be 10-11 dollars.

Oh and I forgot that the dealer said the receiver was that way because it was a Gen 2 A2 receiver. He said there was a Gen 1 A2 with many problems and then the Gen 2 A2 (which is what this is), and now the current Generation we see now I guess Gen 3 with the raised ribs and renforcements. I do not know if this is true or not so i made no comments when he was telling me about it.

The more I'm checking in to this I'm thinking like you guys...a remarked SP-1 conversion trying to be passed as an original A2.

There were all kinds of variations over the years, but I have never heard or seen one  M16 that had the larger diameter front pivot pin instead of the .250 diam pin.

That is a conversion.
The seller is not telling a truth.
Either purposeful or very ignorant.
No other options.

I am not sure that the fencing is the basis for you calling this one a conversion, but just want to offer some anecdotal info on a slabsided A2

(Not M16, but is a factory rifle)

I am not trying to establish the "for sale M16A2" as the real deal, or otherwise. Just offering some reference.

Maybe someone took a real M16A2 and wanted to retro it to a semi slab-side sporter - ever think of that? ... would that not be a flip to us all...  mill the mag fence and have M60Joe do a small to large pin conversions

All kidding aside, I would put absolutely zero additional worth (or factory validity) to it over a normal AR15 "conversion" without a certified letter from Colt.   I concur with the others and haven't seen a single Colt M16 A1 or A2 leave the factory as a slab side in well over my 38 on earth. I know the early (and I mean reeeeaall early) original M16s (not A1s/A2s) came out like this but we're talking late 50's, very early 60's... All A1s and A2s by nature of their classificaiton had raised fences.

I don't think anyone is saying it's not factory Colt, we're just all saying it's not a factory Colt "machinegun" ... would love to see pictures of the rollmarks none the less...
