Hey I'll start off....I am saving my M17S as a project rifle, I want to change the top mainly, is there any alternative other than Kurts for a charging handle? I also figured ona  forward grip optics, maybe flip up BUIS, more venting etc...gimme some ideas!

There was another guy in the very long M17S thread who stated he offered some mods. I forget what page it was, but you might want to read through it and check him out.

well, here is my M17 project:

for less then what it was gonna cost me to send it to Kurt, I found a bench top mini mill locally.......So, I easily justified the mini mill with this project alone.

hogged out the upper rail to allow the top vent holes to breath, smoothed out the bottom to mount the lower rail to it. did the side vent holes and added the front small side rails also. I just need to create something as a charging handle....this will be kind of a temp thing as I eventually would like to do something MP5ish for a charging handle. I am also going to give it a face lift with some gun coat, maybe OD or Tan.......

I would not mind eventually getting another and doing the same, but also making it a 16" barrel.

I just noticed, the M17 uses an AK style FCG. It was also ahead of its time it the piston-powered AR race.

How heavy is the trigger break on the M17S?

I would like to know when Bushmaster is finally going to bring the M17 S back.

Not much surprise there -- the original Bushmaster "Assault Rifle" was more AK-ish than AR-ish in design/operation.

this one is mine :)  old pic, old story.... scope is a geniune SUSAT with a handbuilt by Dic Swan mount in the 80's for ACR trials.

the trigger can be improved by lightly sanding the trigger rod channel and light oiling.

overall a very handy little rifle, lots of fun for center mass hits out to 200.

camo is a home jobbie, looks better in the pic than in person, will get it professionally redone one day....

Are there other sources for M17 parts other than Busmaster? I need a Gas Cylinder and op-rod, and Bushy says they are out.

Man, the M17 is addictive to work on. gonna be sad when I actually finish this project......

I will admit, my vent holes were not that great, between learning the Benchtop Mill I have and Cheap End Mills, things could have looked better. I have since gotten some better end mills.....So, the other night decided to clean things up and open up the vent holes a little more. definetely looking a lot better.

I was also looking trying to figure out how to do a side/forward charging handle. I know someone else on the board is doing a side charging conversion to the M17. 2 things that keep me from looking at that option: won't work with my vent holes, and I want the charging handle at the front, thinking top left.....gotta figure out if I want something MP5ish or maybe something FALish.

I am also realizing while I love my little Mini Mill, I would love to have something a little bigger, but maybe still in the benchtop range.....digital readout would rock!!!!!
