I bought a M17s long ago with the purpose of customizing it from the start.  I promptly took it home and shot a few magazines through it, verified that it worked and that it did indeed get hot fast, confirming what I had read about them.  I then tore the stinking thing apart to start making it the way I wanted it.  Needless to say the rifle has sat in parts since then as AK building became an addiction.  Well with all the M17 threads lately and no other projects I decided to get this rolling.

I shortened the upper receiver then milled all of the cooling slots yesterday.  I had shortened and rethreaded the barrel a few years ago.  I had to go get some steel tubing today to make a new part to replace the tube that goes between the flash hider and the receiver cap as the original is too short now.  I found the correct size tubing so I'll just need to cut it to length.  I'll probably order a charging handle and some rails from K&M to finish this up.  A little Norell's moly resin should do well for finish.  It feels good to get back to it.  I just needed a little motivation and that was provided by the recent threads, so thanks to all.

The slots need to be cleaned up a little more but Im happy with them as I only have cross feed on my little Jet JMD-18 mill and therefor do a lot of table movements by hand, (I can only dream of CNC stuff).  Not as clean as a K&M job no doubt but the price is right and I like it so far.  I hoping that I get this done and don't throw it in the corner again.

Im not sure that the receiver getting hot would cause any funtion problems at all.  I just know that it got hot enough after a couple of quick magazines that I could no longer put my support hand on the alum. receiver and be comfortable due to the heat build up.  This is the reason for the slots.  Before there was just no where for barrel heat to go except to all that alum. surounding it.  I plan on using a VFG as well so my hand isn't in contact with the receiver for this reason as well.

As a fellow lefty, the M17S is not friendly at all! I took one shot and after peeling the brass off my lip, I quickly put it down. My son now claims it for his own.

You need to add a brass deflector.  The one from a MUR upper works well, or you can make your own.

I got a bit more done on it.  The steel tubing cost $5.  I turned the new piece on my mini lathe then dug around in my vault and found an old Knights VFG and two pieces of rail.  I installed the front rail for the grip and the side rail for a small light if I want one at some point.  Im thinking that I'll order a top rail and a charging handle from K&M.

Nice work, mg5! I like where you're takin' that M17S. It always seemed to me to be a platform with lots of promise. I've seen some very nice results posted here. Please keep us up to date with your project!
