Hi folks,

I've been tinkering with disassembly of my new M1A, and from what I have read, it seems that the first thing to do (after insuring an unloaded weapon) is to push the trigger guard to the rear (toward the buttplate), and unhinge it.

The trigger guard on my rifle doesn't seem to want to budge, and I don't want to force it. Is there a trick to this ?

Thanks,

If it is tight that is a good thing.  It means you have a better lock up with the receiver and stock.  After you make sure the gun is unloaded do not fire it.  It is much easier to remove with the hammer cocked.  If you still can't get it out by pulling the rear of the trigger guard toward the but of the gun try putting a thick sock through the rear of the trigger guard for more leverage.  That should do the trick.

First, ensure there is no magazine in the rifle and triple check the chamber empty.  You must cock the hammer and engage the safety before disengaging the trigger guard.  If you try to engage the safety without cycling the bolt you can damage the safety.

I like to use a section of cleaning rod as a lever through the hole in the back of the trigger guard. Use something round so you don't scratch/gouge the steel.
