I am posting this for my friend who is, among other things, internet challenged.

he is building an M1A, mainly for the range and HD as well.

he needs to select a barrel, so the q is, should he go with 18.5" or the 22"?  he will not be shooting more than 300 yds.

should he go chrome lined or not?

medium weight barrel sound good?

thanks for the help.

For his purposes I'd go with the 18.5 inch criterion with chrome lining.  Standard weight would be my choice, especially with the shorter barrel, keep it light and handy.  No doubt about it.

The criterion accuracy is quite good, their chrome plating is well done (thinner and more even than the usgi stuff and less prone to flake out due to more modern technology).   Price is right too.

The shorty you'll like,  handy size and pretty lightweight especially when coupled with a USGI fiberglas stock.  Not that you said you were going there but I would avoid the 16" barrels for the M1a (or any .308 battle rifle) as the blast/noise wave tends to get tiring.  18 is as short as I like.

+1 for the standard chrome lined Criterion 18.5.

Standard 18.0" SEI barrel chambered for M118-LR.
Cryo and M80HT make chrome lined barrels kind of obsolete.

The 16.25" barrel is also an excellent choice if it's set up right.
