Well, so I've started saving money, for a M1A.  This is a split deal between me and my dad, who trained on the M14 back in basic, and always loved the design, he doesn't have all the scratch for one, as he is a disabled vet, and is on a fixed income, and I don't make alot myself, so we're both going in together and scraping our pennies up.

The closest shop to here that even stocks a standard model is 3hrs away, and it is a black stocked one it's around $1380.  I watch the EE often and see some pretty good deals, and most are good guns, some already in USGI stocks most go for $14-1500.  I have a shop that will do a transfer (a arfcommer at that) 3hrs away (yes far, but a hell of alot cheaper then if I can find a local shop.)  Problem really isn't getting it, it what i want to do.

I have two choices:
1)  Buy a black stocked one brand new at the shop, shoot it awhile, and buy a USGI stock, buy a dummy selector, and upgrade as I want with whatever.  I'll have the warranty from Springfield fully too.  Question is, how easy is it to make a standard springy fit in a USGI M14 stock??

2)  Buy a used "build" or other standard with unknown history, and whatever parts that were updated.  Also, I know Springfield has a lifetime warranty, but I don't know, if they would stand behind something that has been messed with by someone else....

In one sense, I want to buy brand new, and do whatever I want to make it how I want it, but on another I might be able to get some better deals on the EE.

I just don't know.....

If it were me.

I would buy the brand new springy, and have a lifetime warranty to back up any issues I might have. I've got a polytech myself, but be fair warned that the "gotcha's" get pretty expensive quick. M14 parts are not cheap. At all.

FWIW, buy the sringfield and upgrade later, it will suck to send it back in, but with a limited budget it makes the most sense to me.

That said, the m14 platform is a blast to shoot, I don't even own an AR anymore (I'm sure i will someday again).

OH, and don't look at any of H20_Man's posts, his guns will make you go broke quick

Yeah, I know the parts ammo, and everything is high for the M1A, it's definatly the rich mans rifle.  I just have a motivation to get one though, not only for dad, but it will round out my collection of every US battle rifle from WWII till now

The way i figure it with the warranty, is if it's small, extractors stuff like that, I can swing that, but major stuff, it will go back, they give the warranty, make them fix it

I have a M1A Standard Synthetic & love it!

So if I were in your shoes, I'd just get one of those (or whatever their budget model is) & just upgrade the stock, ect, as funds allow.

Keep looking for deals on new ones..I know the prices are high right now, but I decided I wanted one in Sept before Obama was elected, so prices were up there...and I found my loaded with black stock for $1200 cash and carry at a gun show..still had factory grease and came with the box and mag.
