Just signed up to the board yesterday, and was cruising through.Nice place here, with lots of good info! I have an M1-A that was passed onto me, seems to be in great shape. The back of the reciever reads as follows U.S. Rifle,7.62-mm M1A,Springfield Armory. The serial number is a 0040XX. From what I was told it was manufactured may or march 8th of 75. I have only shot it maybe a hundred times or so. It still has some cosmo around the rear sight as well as the charging handle groove.I've enjoyed learning so much about this rifle from all of you. Thanks for the info. I will stop by often for the latest, and probally ask a stupid question or two.

Are you sure that it's cosmoline? It could be grease. M-14 type rifles are lubricated with grease not oil. If it is your first M-14/M-1 type rifle get a copy of "The M-14 owners guide and match conditioning proceedures" by Scott Duff.

Could be grease, did'nt really look at it to close. I just assumed it was cosmo. Oh well, I'll look at it and make sure. Thanks.
