My dad just gave me his old Iver Johnson M1 Carbine that he bought new in the early 80's.  Its a 50th Anniversary Model.

The Rifle is pretty cheaply made but Im wondering if other M1 Carbine parts will fit it.

The Operating Spring Guide is broken, the Hammer is pretty messed up and I would also like to replace the Bolt (round).  I figure I can get everything for around $100.

Worth trying to make this into a working rifle?
Or just gut it and make a nice display?

You'll sell it broken for more than it cost to fix.

So Im assuming you think its not worth keeping.

Bolt is $60 and the other parts would be around $30.
So $90 to fix.

there is a reason those parts are broken. I doubt it is because they went through a hard service life.

iver Johnsons are known to be shittily made with shitty metal.

In addition to the above, you can't just "drop in" a Carbine bolt.  It MUST be checked for head space, otherwise it's not safe to fire.

Iver Johnson Carbines are not up to USGI standards, but aren't total junk either.
The Iver Johnson was built to nominal USGI specs, so "most" GI Carbine parts "can" be installed, albeit with possibly some fitting.

Selling as-is it will be worth no more than the parts, and broken rifles don't bring much.
Repaired PROPERLY and it's worth at least something, and it would probably make a decent shooter.

For parts here's some good sources.  Remember, have a real gunsmith do a fast head space check if you replace the bolt.

I would not fix it. When the situation presents itself and you need a defensive weapon, grab the end of the barrel with both hands and use it as a club.

I planned on taking the rifle to a local gunsmith and having him check everything over and test fire it for me once all the parts I need are replaced.

I got the gun for free, so if it costs me $100 to get it safe and reliable again its still cheaper than anything else.

As for home defense I have a 12 gauge pump and a .357 Taurus for that, if my German Shepherd doesnt get to them first.

Just looking for something fun to shoot paper with.
