I took my "new" M1 carbine to the range today.   The only magazine that I have is the 15 round magazine that came with the carbine when I purchased it.   The first 15 rounds that I feed through the carbine were trouble free.  I then loaded the magazine again and tried to feed another 15 rounds through the carbine.

This second time, I had problems with the rounds chambering correctly.  When trying to chamber the first round, the bolt would go forward and the round was partially chambered.  If I would put forward pressure on the operating rod, the round would then slide into the barrel and the carbine would be ready to fire.  After firing that round, the same thing would happen.  The bolt would move the round out of the magazine but it would not chamber fully.  If I pushed forward on the operating rod again, the round would chamber correctly and the round would fire.  This happened every time that it fired.

Does anyone have any idea of what the problem could have been?

Also, I have another small problem.  The bolt will not lock back on an empty magazine.  The only way that the bolt will lock back is if the little pin on the operating rod is pressed as the operating rod is pulled back.

Does anyone have any idea of how to fix this?

Thanks for all of the help.

When you say "new" do you mean just that it is a newly manufactured rifle?

It sounds to me like a feeding issue related to the mag. Does it appear that the round is hanging up as it is stripped off?

It has been some time sinse I took my Saginaw carbine out but I don't remember the bolt holding open on the 15 rounders? I do know that they will on the GI 30's.

It's not supposed to.

The magazine follower on all 15 round mags. will not allow this. On *some* 30 round mags., the follower is different and it will do this.

As for your other problem, try a new recoil spring. The one that pulls the op rod back into battery. You also might try a very thorough cleaning and lubing if you haven't already.

By "new" I meant new to me, not new in general.  It was manufactured in 1944 (I believe).  The rounds may be hanging up as it is stripped off, but I don't know if this is the cause of the problem since the first 15 rounds went through without a problem.

I will be getting more magazines tomorrow, so I can test to see whether or not it is a magazine problem.

I've been around Garands too long.

The recoil spring, according to FA's web site.

Mine has a bolt hold open on the last round, and I only own 15 round magazines.

I don't know who made them or when, but they have 'UN' stamped on the back.

If your 15 rounders have the square cut back on the follower then someone probably took it (the follower) out of a aftermarket mag. I've done that, works just fine.

UN = National Postal Meter built mag.

What makes the bolt hold open is the follower in the magazine. If it is tapered in the back it will not hold it open, but if it is flat on the back it will. This is the little "bump" stamped on the top of the follower that makes you seat the first round to the side of it. The only ones I have seen with flat backed followers were on 30's. Either some 15's were made that way or someone switched yours out with one from a 30. However, even when the bolt is held open, as soon as you remove the mag., it closes unless you engage the detent manually on the slide.

Could be alot of things. Recoil spring might be too tight, buy a couple and try them. Take one and cut 1/4 coil off at a time and see if that doesn't cure the problem.

Also, make sure the gas piston moves freely and the gas nut is tight (should be staked but they do come loose).

Clean and lube it well, and make sure you're using GOOD, USGI or equavilent ammo. M1's are finicky about underpowered rounds.

Good luck.
