I have recently found a M1 Garand. It is marked  H& R  Arms Co serial # 56xxxxx. I know little about these guns but was hoping someone could fill me in, is it a decent find. I am keeping it regardless but of course was looking for a little history.

I didnt know H&R made garands. The only ones I have seen are prior aare marked by springfield.

HRA was one of four M1 manufacturers.  The other three being SA, International Harvester(yes the farm/tractor company!) and Winchester.  HRA's are all post Korean war production but are regarded widely as being the best in fit and finish as HRA was a well established gun maker long before the gov't contract for M1's came along.  I have a couple and they are very nice rifles.  Winchester's are all WWII production and bring hefty prices due to that fact and that they were produced in the least amount.  IHC's are also collectable.  SA was the largest producer of M1's but not to be confused with SA Inc which is a commercial eentity that uses the same name as the original govt arsenal.  They built M1's right thru the end of production..

Nothing wrong with a nice HRA rifle at all.  I like them just fine!
