Howdy, just looking for a little bit of help with my new garand.

I took it out shooting today, and for about 50 rounds it worked well. Then the trigger seemed to lock back in the "fire" position.
The hammer is down, and pulling the trigger will not release it since it seems to be back already.
I can release the hammer by jimmying it free with a knife or something, then the trigger returns to normal, but as soon as I push the hammer back down, it is moved backward and will not release the hammer.

I have a feeling the problem is the trigger pin, as I have already replaced the hammer spring, but I'd like some confirmation if possible.

first pic is the trigger with the hammer down, but not being pulled (still displaced)

this is the trigger being pulled, and you can see it doesn't have the clearance to release the hammer.

I'm not sure but I don't see how the trigger pin would be an issue.

I'd be looking at the sear/trigger assembly or maybe the safety.

The pin is awfully worn. I've already replaced the hammer spring so that's not it...and I don't see how the safety could be causing this problem. This is my first garand though, so I could be wrong. What information I have managed to find points to the pin not holding it in place though.

I'm far from an expert for sure... Head over to the CMP website....www.odcmp.com

I know they can get you on track.

Good luck!

Sounds like a broken or galled trigger pin, possibly a fouled, gummed up trigger group.
It's possible the trigger pin has somehow moved out of place.

Disassemble the trigger group and give it a good cleaning.
Inspect the trigger pin for break, crack, bent, or galling.

When you reassembly the group, GREASE the hammer and trigger pins.  Grease on these pins helps prevent galling and breaking of the pins, especially the trigger pin.  This works better then oil in this case.

Here's a link to a site that shows how to fully disassemble the trigger group.  The only difficult part is reinstalling the trigger pin and that's just a matter of squeezing your hand hard enough.

I don't see anything wrong from the pic but I Ecco what others said take it apart and clean it good

Thanks, I was thinking of looking them up.

In any event, I took a ball peen hammer to the pin, straightened it up. Trigger works now, go figure.

A bent pin or exceedingly worn pin, IIRC, will do exactly as you say.

so should I just replace this one? It's working, but it could end up bending again huh?

If it was bent, and you straightened it out, it is weaker than it was before and will bend again, or just break.  A new pin is not expensive - buy a couple.

So far, I haven't had to replace a pin for wear, damage or functioning.

I have replaced hammers/triggers in a PolyTech M14s (You can use many M1 Garand parts in the M1As  and M1A type rifles).

yep,  I'd buy a couple of them and a hammer pin and a spring kit, and a firing pin and a maybe an extractor and you'd have a good repair kit.

may as well get the most for your shipping amount.

Ugh, expenses , I'll get a couple pins then.

Well if you wanted to keep it to the minimum, I'd get the pin and a spring kit.   Other stuff can wait.   A spring kit is a like a tune up on an old car.

Or just order the pin for now and see if you can get a vendor to not rape you on shipping and just put it in a padded envelope.  the pin shouldn't cost more than $2.

I'd do both pins and both springs while you're in there.  Look closely at the trigger and make sure the hole isn't busted out and check the hammer and make sure everything there is intact as well before you order.  May as well get a clip latch spring and oprod spring if you already paying for shipping.
