I recently obtained an M1 Socom 16. I have a 1943 garand, which I love, but didnt want to put too many rounds through it, hence the Socom.
I shot it yesterday, came home, got it on the bench, and went to take it apart. It all went smoothly until I got to the the Op Rod... It wont even budge out of the receievr track. I searched every video and forum on the internet for help... to no avail. I simply could not get the thing off. I was just about to bust out a screwdriver and rubber mallet, but then I stopped myself, put it in the safe, and figured I would ask here before I destroy the finish on a new gun. Any tips or tricks? Am I missing something? Thanks in advance. |

I had my m1a standard worked on yesterday. I was unable to remove the op rod and the smith couldn't either at first. He used a rubber mallet to whack it a couple times and finally got it off by prying it from the top. Where did he whack it and where did he pry??? How did he keep from marring the finsh? |

See where the takedown notch is near the rear (1/4" relief notch at the top of the op rod track on the receiver). Align the rear edge of the op rod with the rear of the takedown notch. Wrap the end of a screwdriver with tape (masking, duct, etc). Use the taped screwdriver to apply prying pressure to the op rod. You're trying to twist the oprod up and away from the receiver at the takedown notch. A firm tap on the bottom of the op rod handle should pop it up and out. Use a rubber or plastic hammer and don't start at gorilla strong. |
