I'm looking for a decent walnut stock for my newly aquired SA.  The handgaurds are perfect but the stock appears to be beech and is a little loose.  Where is the best place to find one that want break the bank?

Call Boyds and ask about their seconds.  A new complete stock set from them only runs about $80 I think.

Go to Doug's Stock Pile and get a real Garand stock.  The Boyds do not fit like the originals.

Thanks guys,
Do the stocks that come from Dougs fit tightly?   I really like the look of the Walnut Boyds stock.  Do they come undersized and need fitting?

The boyds stocks will need final fitting but will be a very tight fit when done.  I used file to accomplish this in key areas.  When you file the trigger group opening, just make sure you stay level and go front to back to preserve the angle.  Go slow and check fit regularly.  Then the trigger gaurd will close, you are done.  The whole operation took me 1 minutes but as mentioned, I went slow.

The cutout for the clip latch lever is 1/8 inch too far aft.  The deck heighth from the base of the trigger opening to the top deck is off, usually too thick (not talking about the magazine base area).

The trigger housing cut is too wide and can allow the trigger and hammer pins to walk, and glassbedding in this area disallows use in "as issued" Garand matches.

Lots of wood overhang at butt plate, can lead to a nasty chip if hit just right.

The handguards are FAT and need lots of sanding to begin to approach GI contour.  The stock can stand some sanding as well as it is real fat as well.

Lastly, for some reason the Boyd boys cut the bottom 1/2 inch off the pistol grip area, great fit if you are missing the pinky on your trigger hand.
