today i shot my new m1a scout, all i had was a box of federal american eagle ammo, i noticed on my first shot my fingers from my left hand were resting on the op rod, second shot didnt fire so i dropped mag racked op rod back and could see the shell kind of stuck out the chamber, so i slammed the oprod back shut and pulled it back and it ejected the cartridge.

i sat that cartdrige aside and the other 18 shots were fine, could my fingers on the oprod have cause that problem on the second shot?

Maybe.  You only shot 18 total?

Is it lubed correctly?  And cleaned correctly?  Sounds like your first shot was sluggish for some reason and then shooting it got it moving again.   I would shoot it some more after making sure it's cleaned and lubed properly and see if you have any more problems.

Is this new or used?   Oooops. OK, it's new.

I just wanted to see what it would do straight out the box, it looked lubed up pretty well, that op rod hurt my fingers like a mofo then every other shot was smooth when I kept my fingers off it even a couple double taps

The first thing I do with any "new" firearm is to clean it, then use the proper lube on the "investment".  With M-1's or M-1A's is to use a high quality GREASE for lubrication.  Remember if it slides, grease it.  If it rolls, oil it!  A MTU armor told me to, believe it or not, wheel bearing grease on these rifles and I'd never have a problem.  In 45 years I've never had a malfunction or breakage in any of these rifles.  Congrats on having one of the greatest rifles of all times.

Well if it was lubed properly, it probably was your finger.  Especially since it hurt.  I wasn't there and it's kind of hard to tell by how you explained it.  I'm assuming the bolt didn't go all the way to rear, and closed home on the already spent case.  And then you got it out of there and recharged it with a new round.

But hacksaw tom is correct.  Did you actually break it down?  Because there's more places to grease and oil than the bolt and recesses.  Just like hacksawtom said.  Rotates: oil, slides: grease.

M1As come from the factory dry or with the smallest amount of grease possible, and I do not think they test fire them before shipping them. Follow the recommendation given below by HST, and I'll add that you should polish the bore with a bore brush because more than a few have what Springfield describes as a 'rough bore' straight out of the box.

Went out got 50 rounds of CBC m80, couldn't resist had to try it again, 20 flawless rounds caught myself wanting to put fingers on oprod again tho lol , I won a battle against a milk jug, mt dew box, and a pizza box, but the m1a got a few battle scars
Ps I love this beast

The spent case ejected fine, the new round just didnt chamber all the way it was still sticking out a bit when I opened oprod, I let it slam home and it seated then I racked the oprod again and it ejected out

So.....  did you break it down and lube it properly before going?  Glad it ran great.

The trigger guards are sometimes in there really tight with a new wood stock.  But it'll come out.
