All I am very new to the M1a platform.  I just picked up a M1a loaded and it has the Nm sights.  There fine for shooting from the bench but I think the rear sight app is way to small for my liking.

I really like how the Ar has the two rear sights available.  I don't ever plan on using the open sights farther than 200 yards and would like to be able to hunt with it.

What sights would you reccomend?  I have read that some poeple just drill out the Nm rear sight but I don't want to risk fing it up.

Thanks!

I like the NM sights.

But, if you don't, I would suggest just finding a standard rear peep and replacing it, and saving the NM sights for a spare, or if you ever decide to switch it back. XS sights sells replacement sights for the M1A.

Seems like there are two different diameter rear NM sight aperatures.  There rear sight is fairly easy to take apart.  Just like an M1 Garand except for the little spring and ball in your receiver ear (right side) that makes the windage adjustment 1/2 MOA vs. the standard 1 MOA.  Be sure not to loose that spring/ball.  Once you get it apart you can install a standard aperature.  The M1 and M14/M1A use the same aperature , elevation knob, sight cover, windage knob, etc.   A real M14 elevation knob would have the marks graduated in meters vs. yds. but they interchange and work.
