Local gun store has a number matching 1938 M38 Mosin in very nice shape, Hes asking $199

Any thought would be great

Thanks, Clayton

good price in the current market.  Is it an M38 stock or M44 stock?  The last M38 I looked at was priced at $275.  There were some newly imported ones on the market recently and they were about $199, but they are gone and prices are expected to go up.  If you want one now is probably the best time to get it.

Buy it. I paid $200 for a counterbored, m44 stocked M38 last summer.

Buy it! Pat Burns got away with selling an M38 with correct stock for $350ish a month or two ago. Dans Ammo had some correct M38's for $200 maybe 2 months back as well and they went super quick. I got one

I paid 250 for an all matching m38 last month and that was a deal for my area. I'd buy it before the seller realizes that his price is to low and raises it.

Are you sure of that date ?

if it's dated 1938 it is probably a 91/59 carbine not a M38.

$199 is a fair price for a 1938 dated 91/59.

Dumb question, but what is the difference between a m38 in a m38 stock and an m38 in a m44 stock?  I bought a m38 but am unsure of the stock.  Regardless $200 I paid for it last year was not a bad price.

The M44 stock has a groove for the bayonet on the right side. The M38 does not.

ETA: If you mean difference in value, the M38 in the M38 stock is more desirable and will usually bring a premium over one in an M44 stock.

Is the rear sight as long as a 91/30's, but have the longer ranges ground off, or is the rear sight the same length as an M44's?  I'm inclinded to say that it is either not an M38, or it is not dated 1938 because no M38's were made in 1938.  A few dated as such have surfaced, but they were scrubbed and restamped.

The M83 has the same rear sight as the M44.

The sight you're thinking of is on the M91/59. (cut down M91/30)

Forgot to mention that in my post.  My post is accurate with this information. M44 RS = M38 RS; partially scrubbed M91/30 RS = M91/59 RS.

199 seems normal from what I'm seeing lately, but how have these gone up so much in value? I remember getting my m38 for 79 bucks. It's all matching and correct stock too with a nice bright shiney bore.

Word is there aren't any more to import so prices are going up.

Yeah, I paid $74 OTD for a 1940 Izhevsk back in '05. Should have bought more. $200 may be the current going price for them, but I won't pay that.
