I posted this over on Gun Boards yesterday, figured I'd share it with you folks as well. Yes the pics suck, as my camera doesn't do well in the bright snow.
Yesterday was a cold miserable assed day, a couple inches of snow down here at the house, so I figured there should be a bit more up on the mountain a few miles away. I grabbed a pack of Russian LB and a pack of Bulgarian LB, my target stand, and a couple targets, and the ol' M39. Drove up on the mountain to the old quarry which ironically is about 1/4mi away from a old Civil War battlefield. Anyways, up there there was about 5-6" of snow, and it was snowing pretty good, and it may have been all of about 15-20*. Anyways, I set the target out at what I paced off to be 50yds, probably a bit more, marked a firing line in the snow, and commenced to burning some ammo.
Rifle in the snow, yes I set the rifle in the snow, where else would it go it's Finn for Gods sake M39 VKT 1941 made, built on a 1904 Tula receiver.
Target setup:
I fired Russian at the top target, and Bulgy at the bottom, all offhand, and I'll admit, I can't shoot for shit off hand, I was moving all over the place, but none the less this is what I came up with. 10 rounds at each target.
I had seen a old log someone had left up there to shoot at, at about 25yds, but for some reason it had no holes in it, I fixed that Log was about 10-12" thick, and looked pretty threatening. I commenced to finishing the last of my ammo on the log rapid fire
I walked up to check the carnage after i ran out of ammo, and was surprised to see every round had passed clean through, and had spread wood chips another 20yds behind it
So, in the end it was a fun time in the snow, my M39 felt like it was back home in Finland, and no folks snow in the action won't hurt your rifle at all, yes I dropped some rounds in the snow loading the rifle with gloves
