I've had some great communication and detailed information from AAC regarding their M4-2000...It makes me want to buy the M4-2000.
However, it seems like everyone else I talk to/hear from recommends against the M4-2000, even at the current sale price and $200 offer from SS. I don't get it? It can't be that bad of a suppressor. Is most of it fanboyism of other manufacturers? People being burned by AAC or something? Are some retailers getting kickbacks from SiCo, Griffin, Sig, etc. to sell their product, and that's why they push others? Can some members help explain to me why it is still used by LE & the Military, if it has such a bad mounting system and has such bad gas blowback. And...why shouldn't I buy it as my first suppressor for $470ish at Capitol or $577 at SS with a $200 SS gift card? Thanks for any help...I know I've done a lot of asking about suppressors lately. I'm new to the game and it's a big purchase for me right now...and there is soooooo much conflicting information I don't know who to listen to at any one time?!?!
|
| I've got 3 51t cans and one on the way, I'll take a wobble (even though after some rounds it fouls up and goes away) over all the stories I hear about launching cans down range from all the "this is way better than that AAC crap mounting" mounts. That being said, the surefire Mini I have mount is nice, but damn the price is up there. |
|
My buddy has one, paid over $800 a few years back.
We're both at the point of having a healthy stable so it never goes on or off, dedicated to that gun - I think a 14.5" middy? I don't even think he has a 2nd 51t mount. Wouldn't be a bad choice for the price but don't let a few hundred sway your NFA purchases. And yes, I'm calling the kettle black.
|
|
I have 1 that I swap between 18", 16", and 11.5". Have all 3 style mounts also. I would guess I have ran 8k through it and a lot of that was on the 11.5 (it runs a brake). The brake mounts show signs of errosion but the baffles in the can look good. I have shot carbine classes with it on the sbr with no issue. Really happy with it.
A few months back i noticed that the can wasn't locking up on my newest 51t mount. The latch had worn too much. Called aac, got an rma number from then with a prepaid label, and shipped it back. Got the can back within a week and a half. New latch and they refinished the outside also (looks new). Customer service was top notch. |
|
I just don't see how I can not go for it. I think it ends up at $597 through my powered by dealer. Add the $200 gift card to SilencerCo and it seems a no brainer. One day left to make that decision though...
It's $476 at Capitol! But, no $200 gift card. I mean...I can get it, with the tax stamp, for less than just the M4SD II without a stamp. Man, I'm torn between these two, and searching for a SpecWar 556k... How bad, really, is the gas blowback on the M4-2000??? |
|
I have had an M4-2000 for 7 or 8 years and the only real complaint I have is the pinging noise of the blackout flash hiders.
That said I use a mix of the older phantom mounts and modified blackout hiders to eliminate the pinging. (Man I wish they would make more phantom mounts...love those things.... or produce a revised pingless blackout hider) It true that the 51th mounting system has a tiny bit of play depending upon the mount/hider but its really a non-issue in my experience and there is almost no chance of launching the can downrange. Spin it on until it bottoms out and if you hear ratcheting than its locked down. No collars to forget which why they go on, tabs to line up, and mine has never gotten stuck/frozen onto the mount like other manufacturers, etc. I actually just bought a second M4-2000 (demo model) with three mounts for $385 a couple months back. Although it I hadn't I would be all over Silencershops $200 deal and pick up a few extra mounts with the rebate. |
|
I don't know that I can pass it up...I think I'm going to call SS tomorrow and grab it. I really like the Griffin M4SD II and K...maybe I'll use the $200 to grab an M4SD-K next.
I also really like the SpecWar 556k...it's the only thing that makes me think about not pulling the trigger on the M4-2000. |
|
It's an excellent can. I highly recommend it. You can eliminate the 51T wobble by sanding the mating surface down a little, but it has no noticeable effect, except on precision rigs.
If you hold down the latch most of the time, to keep it from making the ratcheting noise, it'll last longer. I haven't worn out my original ones yet, on either my 7-year-old M4-2000 or SDN-6. |

Anyone seen the M4-2000 go for much less than $597? Curious if it would drop much more...not that I'd wait. The $200 gift card is a pretty nice extra. M4-2000 |

The wobble never made a difference on my can. Across 5 different rifles, no real issues. Minor POI shift with the can on/off...as with any other can. No accuracy issues from it. I never understood what the big deal was. It's really minor...and caused no problems.
It seemed like 99% of the guys complaining about accuracy issues from wobble, were shooting low cost ammo out of a non match grade barrel and often using a red dot...how do you even check accuracy with that setup? |

It's only a problem in their minds. Quoted:

Yes, AAC will replace your ratchet(s) for free if you ask. Generally the same treatment for a refinish too. Their CS has been top-notch before and after the Remington buyout. |

Quit vacillating and buy it already, your mind is made up.
Here is some help: the best deal I could get on transfers in MN is $50 and $75--or SS for free. So $100 is high. Either find a cheaper dealer or just use SS. Also, if you transfer in you have additional wait time for a form 3--not sure you considered that or not. Are you eligible for SPEQ pricing for Sico at all? Have you called Hansohn brothers to see if they would price match? |

Here is a fact - the M4-2000 and it's variants (416) have been proven in the most demanding conditions by the most skilled operators on the planet. Sorry to the haters but no on can deny this claim - it's been there and done that multiple times all over the world. Also its a awesome can for civilians plinking at the range. |

I have had to send my 762-SDN-6 in for two latch replacements so far. I've had two friends that have had to send theirs in at least once as well.
I asked my contacts with them what the deal was and I was told you can expect about 350 on and off's with it if you just ratchet it on and don't hold down the button. I run a gun store and a gun range so mine probably sees more use than average. Repair times were about 30 days each time. I am satisfied with the perfromance, just not the weak latch design. |

Things I don't like about the M4-2000, SDN-6, etc:
1. Flash hider pings 2. The latch is not end-user-replaceable. Things I do like about them: 1. They're quiet. 2. They're a good size and weight. 3. They're durable. 4. Mount availability is good and they're reasonably priced. They're great cans, and in the context of when they were released (~10 years ago) they're EXCELLENT. But against the competition of cans released in the last couple years, there's OF COURSE room for improvement. For example, look at how the Recce 5's specs compare against the M4-2000. Total system weight, length, and a mounting system that doesn't have any moving parts. My SDN-6 has been a great silencer, and if I had to go back I would still buy it. But if I was buying today, I would spend more for a newer design. It just depends on budget in my opinion. |

Does the 416-SD have a NSN?
Is it physically identical to the Mod 08 M4-2000 or is it overbored to reduce backpressure? The 416-SD wasn't overbored. It had a vented baffle stack to reduce backpressure (and allow water to drain out). Since 2013, the M4-2000 now uses the 416's vented baffle stack. The older version (non-vented) baffle stack is used in the 556-SD. The 416-SD was discontinued because the M4-2000 incorporated its upgrade. Have there been any later revisions to either model? Yes, the 2013 (and newer) M4-2000 basically became the 416-SD. What rebar cutter is being referred to? I must've missed that one. on end of 416-SD https://www.ar15.com/forums/t_6_20/441708_.html#i4275306 Update: Answers in blue from AAC Live thread |

Zero complaints with my M42K. It's a heavy bitch though.

It's a heavy bitch though. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/80098/N4-with-M42K---Copy-220508.JPG I've thought about a "K" can, but am wondering if I'll be happy with the dB attenuation for my first can. M4SD-K and SpecWar K 556 seem to be the winners for dB on the K cans. |

Most of the warranty returns for worn out latches are actually not a true worn out latch. The majority of them are simply loose and exhibit more play than when new due to normal wear. We go ahead and replace the latch regardless no questions asked. However we do get some legitimately worn latches and some are from excessive use, the current turnaround for repair is 3 days. The most memorable latch warranty issue was from a customer that returned a 556-SD. His comment was "I have OCD and needed to know how many cycles it would take before it wore out.". We fixed it no questions asked. |

Looking good! The weight of the system does concern me a little at 21+ ounces, but other than the Omega, it seems like every other 6.5+ inch system is 19-21oz, or more. I've thought about a "K" can, but am wondering if I'll be happy with the dB attenuation for my first can. M4SD-K and SpecWar K 556 seem to be the winners for dB on the K cans. Quoted:

But then again, going that route adds in length and weight. Your money, your priorities will obviously dictate. The 51t system is a non-issue for me. And I use my M42K across a multitude of hosts. ETA: I have no issues with gas blow-back with this can. I do, however, run gunfighter CH's and have a switchblock on the SBR pictured above. |

The latch topic comes up often and is widely misunderstood by the end users. The 51T mounting system was never designed to be a rock solid PRS style mounting system. It is designed as a "battle mount" with tolerances or "play" to allow the operator to be able to remove the silencer from the mount after excessive use, carbon build up and neglect. Also to be able to install with only gross motor skills and without needing to align or lock anything. Just slip over the mount and twist until it stops. Most of the warranty returns for worn out latches are actually not a true worn out latch. The majority of them are simply loose and exhibit more play than when new due to normal wear. AAC...do you have any idea if SS is selling new production M4-2000's? Hoping for one with a late 2016 or 2017 manufacturing date. |

Attached File Love my two. The ping is annoying but the brakeout and brake take care of that. |
| Got my m42k last spring. Can't believe I waited so long to get one. Love it, pretty much comes out any time I go shooting. Normally used on a 10.3 or 11.5 Colt setup. Does have a little wobble at first but after a couple rounds it locks up solid. I'm extremely happy and would buy again. |
