Been having some quirkyness with my M60 as of late.

It'll run 15-20rnd like a top and then it'll catch a casing between the ejection port and the bolt.  Sometimes it'll only run 5 rnds.  The thing that gets me is it will chamber another round.  It started all the sudden last month towards the end of a shoot, thought it may be becuase of the broken bolt.  But it still does it.

I have all new parts in it minus the barrel and piston/gas cylinder.

Anyone know what's up?  Or what to look for.  Everything looks like it's in top shape and same with everyone who has worked on 60s says the same.

Maybe an ammo thing?

Mine did that too until I switched to the brand new E4 parts I bought from US Ordnance.

I would suggest checking the drive spring, extractor & spring, and ejector & spring. Then check the sear and the operating rod for wear.

Do you have a receiver stretch gage (Sarco sells the kit)?

Finally, there are a few tips which will prolong the life of your M60 and potentially enable it to run better overall. Do you use a dummy round at the end of your belt to keep the bolt from slamming home on an empty chamber? Do you inspect and, if necessry, stone the bolt lugs to keep them smooth? Do you pull the trigger fully and let it go all the way to prevent the sear from riding (and wearing) the operating rod? Do you avoid keeping the bolt closed on the hot barrel to prevent tempering the springs (ejector spring & extractor spring)?

We can meet up in DFW sometime (maybe at the Tom Bean range or APG) to compare. Also, are you going to Pike308's annual machine gun shoot at Tiger Valley in Waco?

The drive spring is new, so Im assuming it is fine.  But I will check again.  I'll check the extractor/spring and the ejector/spring when I get home.  What should I look for?  I tore the gun down to give it it's usual good cleaning and all seemed normal.

I dont have a receiver stretch gage, but assume I'll need one.

I do have a dummy round at the end of each belt I shoot.  After each shoot I check over all the parts for any adverse wear etc., havent noticed I needed to stone the bolt lugs yet.

Trigger gets pulled fully and firmly during firing.  After the belt has been ran the bolt is kept back & top cover open until cool.

Is the Pikes .308 shoot the one that usually happens in the spring?  If so, we'll be there.

Good advice from hrt4me.  I'll also add that you should clean out the gas tube on the receiver with a shotgun bore brush or similar (this is the tube that the op rod rides in).  You might also try cleaning out your barrel's gas system if you can't hear the gas piston moving back and forth when you tilt the barrel.

Another suggestion: try posting this at subguns.com  Lots of M60 experts over there, including Tony Rumore.

Doesn't appear to be anything wrong with your ammo, but if you want to give me several hundred rounds of each brand, then I'd be happy to test it for you (at no charge) and report back to you promptly!
