Greetings.
I have a Mossberg 535 ATS. I was loaded with 3 1/2 inch shells and in the field (waterfowl) and the magazine spring failed.
At first I thought it was something with the cartridge elevator but when the shells fell out when I up ended the gun, I saw the follower was not snapping back. I checked when I got home, there is nothing caught in there. No sand, dirt or debris. I feel it moving freely when I load snap caps.

I am sending it back to Mossberg for repair (it is under warranty).

Has this happened to any one? After how many rounds roughly?

I have cycled 2 3/4, 3 & 3 1/2 - shot slugs, buckshot, target.skeet, and steel shot through it with appropriate barrel changes and chokes. This is the first issue I have had with the gun.

Just Curious thanks

Happened to me on a brand new 590. Pull the magazine cap and see if the spring is all wadded-up on itself in the tube. If so, just get a new mag spring from Brownells, Numrich (e-gunparts.com), Wolff gunsprings, etc. I don't know for sure, but I imagine Mossberg will just replace it with a stocker, which obviously isn't worth a flip, and it may take a while. The ones I've bought have been long, and I just snipped them several inces longer than the mag tube. I don't remember the rule of thumb on the length, but someone on here will. Hope this helps.

There is no cap on the 535 (like the 500) its a takedown screw. off the barrel and the end of the magazine can not be removed (not that I can see anyways)

Looks like it's back to Mossberg for service. Thanks

Aah soo, I forgot about that. If you want to try, the magazine tube can be unscrewed. I just used a rubber strap wrench from an auto parts store. Put the strap up close to the receiver. Righty tighty, lefty loosy- normal threads. When you put it back, just snug it up tight, but remember- it doesn't hold the world together.

Mossberg puts some ridiculously weak springs in their mag tubes. My 590A1 with a 20' barrel came with a 22' spring. I replaced it with a spare 6+1 Remington 870 magazine spring from an 870 LE extension.
