Just bought a STG556, it is currently in gun jail and I have not had a chance to fire it. I have a chance to buy an E4 stock for $150.
I do not have any AR mags. Aside of the logistics end, how comfortable is the stock compared to the STG556? I have read all 13 pages in this forum and have read varying accounts. I have the following concerns... 1. Future availability of STG mags? 2. AR mags are all over the place, and my friends have ARs, and mags so I could use them with the E4 stock 3. If the mag catch issue is resolved is this a worthwhile purchase? 4. Ergonomics issues, comfort, etc. thank you for your time, CaliRN |
I also like the STG stock better. I wouldn't worry about MSAR running out of STG mags any time soon. They have the ability to crank them out as needed. I won't go into the STG mag is better than the AR mag here. It's like the old AR vs. AK war.
But like JoeDirt said for $150 for the E4 stock, buy it. You can always make a few bucks on it later.

If you don't have any AR mags, then stick with the STG stock. AUG mags are superior in a lot of ways to AR mags, and they've been making them since ~1976. Good, solid kit.
I was hell-bent on getting a bullpup that took AR mags until I got to play with the AUG mags. I now have a couple dozen of them. ETA: I see you are in California? If you don't plan on using the rifle out of state, then it doesn't really matter what kind of mag you use. You'll be stuck with a 10 rd mag and a Bullet-Button. |
| AR mags are everywhere. StG mags are only available from a less than handful of manufacturers. I'm not saying the StG mags aren't worth going with but having the capability to run AR mags if StG mags become hard to get is essential, IMO, to keep your platform operational over the long term. |

It sounds like the STG stock is more comfortable than the E4 and.... The price on the E4 is right... So I will buy the stock and rathole it for when i am out of state, or I need a comon platform with my buddies wiht all their AR mags, Or for future sale- For $150 I don't see a downside to the whole thing. There are legit reasons for some folks to go with the AR mags, but fear of magazine supplies drying up isn't one of them. You are right, AR mags are everywhere, but you can find AUG mags on the net without a problem. Even older STG stocks will take Steyr mags with a little sanding. 2 minutes with a nail file would suffice. |
