I recently purchased a new STG 556 and the mags stick in the mag well, is this common?

That's fairly common when new.  The mags should not require a lot of effort to remove, though.

That's how it is on both of mine.

The factory MSAR mags drop free on my new GenIV. AUG mags go in snug however and require a little tug to remove. Try popping the mag in and out about 50 times. It is only plastic/polymer afterall.

It is common and can get better in time. The question is do you really have to pull on them, or do they come out easily? One of my stocks stuck a lot and i really had to pull hard to get the mags out so i did some tweaking.

You will notice 4 vertical ribs on the inside of the magwell.  2 towards the front of the well (one on each side) and 2 towards the back. IF your stock is earlier than Gen IV (Forward assist), the ribs towards the rear of the well are usually the ones you want to tweak first. These are also the ribls which prevent the insertion of a Steyr Aug mag. Start by filing the side of the rear rib that looks the thickest (the side that protrudes the most). Only remove a very small amount, .010 - .020.

If your convinced they arent dragging on the rear you can tweak the front ribs. be sure to try with different mags so that you arent making a mod to your magwell based on the dimensions of just one mag.

Thanks for all the info, I was starting to think something was wrong with my rifle.
