I bought two Gen4 STG556 rifles, one is the 16' railed model, the other is the 20" optic model.  Both are in the 9000 serial number range.

My problem is with the removal of the receiver/bolt carrier from the stock.  After I remove the barrel assembly, I am able to push the takedown plunger through without any problem...however, the receiver absolutely will not come out.  I thought maybe this was just a tight fit, but it is exactly the same on both rifles.  If I push up and down on the receiver, it will move 1 or 2 millimeters and sounds like something is preventing movement.  Neither rifle has been fired since leaving MSAR.

I have a Steyr AUGA3 and have absolutely no problem breaking it down.  Anyone have any thoughts?  I saw a post somewhere that said MSAR suggests shooting several hundred rounds to loosen things up, but I would like to inspect and lube before shooting.

Try this.  Pull the cocking handle all the way back and let it go and repeat.  The impact will usually pop the receiver from the stock.  After a while it will loosen up.

This really is how it should have been put into the manual.

When you check that the gun is unloaded, just leave the BCG locked back....push the take down pin through....let the BCG whip home and poof, out slides your receiver.

Sorry, forgot to mention that I tried that.  Let if fly a dozen times at least.  Neither one budged.  I spent a good hour trying to wiggle the receiver, while holding takedown plunger in, etc, etc.

I only resorted to posting here because I didn't want to try to force things.  To say that I'm baffled would be an understatement.

Any other thoughts?

LOL!  I may need to HTFU a little bit!  Are these things really that tight when new?  I just don't want to try to force things apart without knowing if anyone else has had a similar problem.  Not sure if I could even get warranty work done at this point in the game.

OK, that you have a A3 now, so we know that you know how to take the STG down.

I just don't understand as to why BOTH of your STG's are doing this. It sounds like you have done everything in the correct manner.

Our 2 STG's were tight but just enough to take to palm of my hand and wack the rail on one and the scope on the other to have them pop right out of the stock. Now the crossbolts were way way tight! I had to drift them out of the lock position several time before they became loose enough to do it with my thumb.

I'm at a loss for any ideas other than taking a rubber mallet with a few light taps on the rail from the back to drive the receiver out. The carrier force should have been enough to drive it out.

I would give MSAR a call or email (better choice) to see what they say.

Hope you get it out soon and let us know if and when you do get it out.

Are these STG556's or E4's?  If E4, do you have screws in the stock mounting points?

Yes, I am familiar with disassembly of the Steyr, so I'm definitely pushing the takedown plunger all the way through.  The following is the response I got from Bill at Ratworx.

"Hi Brian,

Not an uncommon problem, Sometimes with a new gun you will need to let the bolt slam forward 6 to 10 times before they come apart. I do it with the barrel in and have the receiver assm pointed over a big cushion like your couch.  If you still can not get it out.......make sure the bore is clear.....then fire about 200 rounds.......should loosen up and come apart.

Bill"

So I tried it with both MSARs.  Neither budged in the slightest.  Looking at the Steyr receiver and stock, and assuming the MSARs are similar, I am assuming either the trunnion is hanging up on the plunger.  I have thought about pulling the trigger pack and running a small wooden dowel down to the trunnion and giving it a few whacks.  I hate to put any force on the rail or the scope as I have seen too many pictures of MSAR receivers with broken off threaded studs to put that much force on a cast aluminum part.

If that doesn't work, I suppose I can break out a fresh can of M855....and hope that eventually they loosen up....

Sgtlmj,

They are STG556s.

I have no idea if this will work, but heat the stock up with a hair drier and let the bolt carrier slam closed until it releases.  If the plastic expands, the received may break free.

If you are familiar with the platform, remove the take down latch out of the stock completely. If it still doesn't come out, then you know you just need some more force behind it. There would be nothing left holding it in. The real tough guns, we would point the gun to the ceiling and slam it on to a bench making sure the rail was the only part hitting the bench.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions everyone...I'll be sure to post after I get some results!

My STG was REALLY stuck in there the first time I took it apart.  Keep the barrel in the first time and use the foregrip to push the receiver out of the stock. I too was pretty sure I was doing something wrong.

It's much easier to disassemble now.  Happy shooting.

Thanks...I didn't think about using the handle to put additional pressure on it...will probably get back to those pesky rifles soon...working on taxes right now.

Mine was the same way when it was new. I tapped out gently the first time with a rubber mallet. Within a few more takedowns, it was popping out with a gentle tap on the stock with my hand. It will loosen up. I actually had to go to the store to get the mallet!

You ever get the thing apart?  My Gen IV is the same way, letting the charging handle fly forward didn't do a thing, even after 50 or so consecutive attempts.  So I'm curious if a rubber mallet works for you.  Personally, I'd be worried about breaking the hinge for the front grip.  Mine just plain does not want to budge and I'm concerned about how much force I'd have to apply.
