Went shooting yesterday, took out my MSAR STG. Got two mags into shooting and it stopped extracting, took a look at the bolt and noticed that the extractor had broken off. Thank goodness I am a lefty and have the right hand bolt with me, swapped the extractors and had it up and running in 5 min. I have only put about 300 rounds through it and I was wondering if this is common or did I just get a "bad" extractor. This is not to say anything bad about the STG, because I love this thing. I just need to know if I need to stock up on extractors. Thanks.
"EDIT" The ammo used were some reloads of LC Brass with 55 gr Hornady's with 24 gr of H335. |

You may have one of the older extractors before the redesign. If you're shooting with a very early Gen IV or older than it may be the older extractor design.
Steel cased ammo is tough on extractors as well regardless of the firearm so FYI on that one too you'll always shorten the service life of an extractor with steel cased ammo, but not 300 rounds shortened. I know for certain that every STG 556 with a serial number of 6800 or higher has the new extractor. Can't say for sure about the other non-forward assist before that, but definitely the GEN III and older do not have the new extractor (unless of course they've been upgraded). For those newbies reading this with the STG E4 that takes AR mags relax, you are fine. All the E4 have the new extractors. Could be fine with the old extractor. Steyr had a similar issue with their extractors for the MA1 pistols and everyone was always reporting problems, but I had my old extractor and never skipped a beat with my M40A1. I did get the extractor replaced eventually though just because it bothered me not having the new one...OCD like that I guess. TOMAC has posted some good pictures of the old and new extractors for comparison. |

The easiest way to spot the old extractor: It has a circular depression around the extractor spring hole for the rubber doughnut. Here's a pic of the new extractor, notice it doesn't have that circular depression around the extractor spring hole: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v465/Tomac/ResizeofNexExtractor012.jpg Tomac They also (new ones) have a groove milled into the "claw" in the middle. |

Kurt This is a big part of why I have an E4 on a UPS truck, heading to Florida as I type this. Good customer service matters. |

I dont mean to hijack,but...I have a similar problem. My STG also stopped extracting last time I shot it.There is a small piece of brass fused(stuck really damn well) to the inside of the claw, right where that new little cut is.Uh, Dave.? PM me your address and state you need an extractor. When you get the one I send you I want to see the one you have. |

Dave, Thanks for the quick reply. But you have to excuse my computer ignorance, what does "PM" mean? He should said "IM" or "Email" him. Below each member's posts we have those features. Just hit it and you can Instant Message the member here or email them if their account is set-up for that. That way he gets your real name and address without you violating opsec here. |

I believe this is an "old" type. As Tomac pointed out, the old ones have a circular depression around the extractor spring hole. That describes the one that broke. It is machined around the spring hole. A lot less material around the hole than the pic above.
I want to give a big 'THANK YOU' to Dave. Doing what you did is AWESOME! |
