My rig, an RCBS Promelt Bottom Pour

A fresh pour into my 250gr flat point round nose .452 mold

Kicked off the sprue

Opened the sprue, removed the sprue material, and opened the mold to reveal.... BOOLITS!!!

Dumped out the BOOLITS!

LOTS OF BOOLITS!!!

Are your bases rounded or is that a bevel base mold? Hard to tell from your pics.

Looks like you are off to a good start.

Good on ya for jumping in the casting game. It's a whole nother level of reloading enjoyment.

Welcome to the casting club.

I like to drop bullets on several layers of old towels to cushion the soft bullets.

Today I was casting 155 gr bullets for 7.62x39.

Fold the old towels mentioned above  and place them in a cardboard soda or beer flat. When the towel fills up and there isn't any place to drop fresh castings, lift the towel, dumping the cooled bullets into the flat and place the towel back on top of them.

Place a cake pan next to the drop area and cut your sprues into it to eliminate that sorting.

Pour a bigger sprue. If you connect them, they will drop off the sprue plate easier and your base fill out will be better.

Congrats on a successful first pouring!

Nicely done! Casting porn is always good stuff.Just got my Lyman's Cast Bullet 4th Edition. Even though I can't get local lead I will just end up ordering some from sellers on Cast Boolits.

Looks like you're off and running.

There's something really cool about making something useful and valuable (boolits) out of something most folks would consider junk (old wheel weights and fired bullets).

Great start, I like to knock the spruce in its own pan (so that way I can just pour the contents of the pan back into the pot) and drop the boolits on old towels or in a bucket of water (if you drop them in water BECAREFUL).

I'm going to start separating them and get a towel for the new boolits.

I've been using the towel method for years but have always drop the spruces in same box, never thought to dump them in a separate container.  Will be changing that on the next casting session.  Thanks for the tip.

what molds are you using?  I just picked up an AK and was tossing around the idea of getting into casting rifle bullets.  Been doing pistol for a while and have a good lubesizer... :D  I am going to have to go check the archives for your 7.62x39 reloading thread from a while back too.

pure gold Jerry!

Thanks!  Think straight WWs will be hard enough for semi auto rifle bullets?  Getting cold enough here I need to get back over on castoolits and read up.  That forum set up drives me crazy though.  This layout is much more my speed.

I use 1/2 WW's and the other half backstop lead.

I don't push these loads hard, just enough to function my AK.

Yes up to around 1800 FPS, accuracy will fall off after that.

Water drop them if you want to go faster.

Make your own or commercial?

If commercial take a look at White Label Lube's products.

If you want to make your own go check out the Boolit Lube ! section at castboolits.

Can i get a recommendation for a .45 acp / .45 colt lube? Staying below 1500fps

A white label lube for now. I'll make my own later

Will that 50/50 work?
12/4/2012 5:01:32 PM EDT
[#22]
Yes 50/50 is exactly what you want.

If you want to step up with some rifle loads or hot handgun loads look at the BAC.

Congrats on your firstborn cast bullets!

You have already gotten great advice...all I will add to it right now is patience and practice and dont be afraid to experiment with techniques to find what works best for each different mold...and trust me, all of my molds act just a bit different.

Oh yea, I would also suggest using an apron if you dont already have one...other than the obvious safety devices this one has served me extremely well.  One that hangs from your neck and ties around your back.

Enjoy!

I use the Lyman Orange Magic. For rifle and pistol.

eta, you will need a heater for this lube. That's what the cord is for.

I use this same bullet in a Kart barreled 1911 and a 625 with no issues, but you should be aware that it is NOT hardball profile and some folks have feed and chambering issues with it.
