| I am looking into getting my first M-14 (style) rifle and I have a question about optic mounts for them. I was wondering if there is any benefits from mounting a magnified optic in front of the receiver vs. on top of the receiver. I understand that if I mount an optic above the receiver it will have to be canted, for lack of a better term. Is there a benefit one over the other? Thanks |

They are not canted, there are several mounts out there, ARMS, Smith Enterprises and SADLAK that mount directly over the reciever. The mounting base is flat and is in line with the barrel. The M1 Garand is the one you are thinking of that is canted, and thats only to allow the feeding of the enblock clips. There are also several scout type mounts out there to mount optic forward of the reciever. MPD165 |
Ok I thought they were the same in that regard but I guess I was wrong. But is there anything that makes one better over the other? Easy of use, even types of optics that can be mounted. |
The ones listed are all pretty good. As with anything else, when you try and mount optics on something which was never designed to have them in the first place, something must be improvised to mount them. I have the SADLAK and have been very pleased with it. I have heard others rave over the SEI mounts and ARMS mounts. They all have picitinny rails. In the end, its really all about how much you are willing to spend. As far as types of optics, they will all mount the same ones, the key is with the highth of the rings. For example, I have a 3-9 x 40 on my rifle and used medium highth rings. There is plenty of room for the scope but its not too high. Chose the scope and mount then the rings, because the scopes objective size will affect the rings you get. My scope, Ziess Conquest, TPS meduim rings and SADLAK aluminum mount totaled about $600.00. I prefer forward mounted red-dot optics, scout & pistol scopes are also nice. This Micro T-1 / SAGE CQB M14, EBR is a real nice combo that does not require a cheek rest. ![]() If you are looking for traditional scopes with variable magnification look at the SAGE Designated Marksman, M14, EBR. LOP and cheek riser are fully adjustable. This Mod 0 has a Leupold mounted on a Smith Enterprise, Inc. scope mount. The LAW483 M14 MCS by TROY is an excellent choice especially if you like an AR type flat top & B.U.I.S. |
