Has anyone every seen a M-16 A1, that was made by General Motors, Hydro-matic Division ? |
| I have seen several when I was an armorer in the 101st Abn. They belonged to replacements coming into the unit during Desert Shield/Storm and also during basic I saw a couple. I believe I saw a few since I have been in the Air National Guard, but mainly all we have had are M-16 models until we received A2's from FN's and all of the General Motors M-16's I have ever seen are A1 models. Sarge_102, The Hydramatic Division of General Motors did build the M-16 around 1968 although actual deliveries may not have been until 1969. (The price charged to the government was a thought to be incredibly high $316.00/unit !) The Army wanted a second source past Colts'. I no longer remember for sure but I believe Harrington & Richardson also built some M16's. Edited to add: No, I've not seen a GM rifle but thousands were certainly produced. I believe "hydra" should be "hydro" but my notes are from The Black Rifle and hydra is the spelling in that book. |

My race car has the 2 selector type. Powerglide! Built by JW racing transmissions in Florida. Mounted behind my 472 aluminum headed big block Ford with a JW Ultra-bell SFI bellhousing. Best run has been an 10.69 at Great-Lakes dragway in Union Grove, Wisconsin. It is not full auto, full manual valve body, no class 3 paperwork to fill out and no tax stamp, yet! Car is a 79 Mercury Capri, full interior with an 8 pt. cage, still street legal, sort of! Mothers grasp their children when they see this car coming down the street, the tree huggers are appalled at the 5 mpg 100 octane fuel consumption! I love it! By the way, car is all black, tinted windows, all trim blacked out, tinted headlamp and taillight covers. Black cars and black rifles! |

Yes, several. I was working in the armory trying to get 2111 in the Corps OJT. I saw a few Hydras in rifles, and over half our units 50s were AC Spark Plug or Daisy Air Rifle in Plymouth (Daisy used the name of a machine company to make 50s) It was funny because my dad was a boy on a farm just south of town then and they used the land which is now the freeway and ford sheldon road plant to test fire the guns. Anyway, thinking back I saw about 10 when I was in (87-92). I never saw any while in the guard, even when called up in 95, so maybe the army didn't keep any. |

I was issued a Hydramatic M16A1 in basic, and another in a unit. I liked them personally. It always seemed the H&R's were more worn out, i.e. more used. I had one H&R and it worked OK though. All the other A1's I was issued were Colts, one XM16E1 with little to no finnish that still ran fine and two production A1's. Never had an A2 as I was carrying a M9 by then. The only A2's we had were FNs and they were brand new. All the older A1's showed alot of slop between the upper and lower regardless of manufacture. It's just the way they are when they wear. They all still shot fine though. Ross |
