I have an extension for my 870 that, if installed, will stick out 1.25" past the end of the barrel. Will this be a problem?

It might be if you use shot loags. How long is your barrel?

Other than the finish being blasted away fairly fast, there's no problem. Some three gun match shooters have long extensions that stick out even farther.
Because of the extra length, the use of a clamp is even more critical.
