I bought some Lanolin cream from CVS( Say's it's 100% pure medical grade USP modified Lanolin) and some 91% Isopropyl alcohol and was wondering if these are the right items to make the Dillon style case lube with, or do I need different a different specific type of Lanolin and alcohol to do this with?

If this is the correct items what is the mixture ratio that is being used to make case lube?

The tube of lanolin is 2 OZ (56 grams)  and the alcohol is 16 FL OZ (473 ml), so how many oz of lanolin does one mix with how many FL OZ of alcohol to get the proper mixture?

I also can get ethyl alcohol if that will work better, I know it's a better grade of alcohol and is what most Hospitals use so I was thinking it might be a better carrier and evaporate faster once the lube is sprayed on the brass? Any thoughts on that as well?

I think you need the liquid lanolin. This is what I use. And mix one 4oz. lanolin to 16oz alcohol. Get the 99% alcohol if you can if not 91% works youve just gotta shake it up alot.

Would denatured alcohol not work better since it has no water in it and would evaporate faster, it's only used as a thinner and carrier for the lanolin after all, so unless someone knows why it would not be appropriate I think I may try and mix a little with it first.

I also think the lanolin in the tube since it's 100% medical grade can be thinned since it's soluble in the alcohol and will be the same as the liquid once mixed.

I'll do some testing and report back.

My wife also said she "might" can get me some liquid lanolin from the Hospital since she is a pediatric ER Nurse (RN) at the children's hospital and they use that kinda stuff there.

You could try to reinvent the wheel or do a quick read of some of my old notes from previous threads on this subject..............

I have to be honest that I was unsure about using lanolin for case lube. I am now SOLD!!! I recently found some at one of our local
health food stores, so I bought 2) 6oz bottles of pure liquid lanolin. I mixed up the following recipe.

1oz(30ml) Lanolin to 8oz 97%(99% preferred) Isopropyl alcohol

It mixed very well without being warmed, but as others here stated before, get 99% Isopropyl, as the lanolin still
wants to seperate in 97%. Regardless, with a few shakes before spraying the cases, it's mixed well enough for
a good mist. I stood 50 cases up in a loading block and sprayed them down trying to hit the inside of the necks.
I then dumped them in a freezer baggie and rubbed/tossed them about for a few seconds. I have never felt brass
run soo smoothly through my dies! I did disassemble my die first, cleaned it, then shot it with a spray of lanolin mix.
Life is good! Now I just need more primers!

Home made spray mix w/ RCBS Lube

I run (1) small 2oz white bottle of RCBS lube to 32oz of alcohol (91% alcohol)

16oz alcohol : 1oz RCBS case lube

(sorry, I forgot who posted that one)

___________________________________

sounds a bit like my mixture but I use 16 ounces of Isopropyl alcohol to 2 ounces of either RCBS pad lube (which is basically pure lanolin) or I use Pure lanolin from the drug store (if I can find it cheaper than the RCBS.

This is basically the same mix as Dillon pump lube, which I really like but is about 9 bucks a bottle. I can make twice as much for a fourth the cost.

Spray it on lightly and let the alcohol evaporate....leaving a really fine film of lanolin. I usually stand the casings up on a cardboard soda tray and when I'm done, I toss the tray.

BUT, as mentioned by a couple others.....for a few casings while I'm working up test loads (and also exclusively for the fifty BMG) there is absolutely nothing like Imperial!

Home made spray mix w/ LEE case lube

3-4 parts alcohol/1 part lube.

Use the 91% alcohol, the 70% contains too much H20.

If it's warm/hot outside, I place lubed cases on cookie sheet and let the sun hit them. If it's cool, I warm them in a low temp oven (150 deg). Cases get nice sheen of lube and alcohol evaporates.

I bought a case of pure lanolin and a case of 99 % alcohol and will never need to buy case lube again. You can order them by the bottle if you don't want that much.

Use 99% alcohol because the lanolin mixes better (<1% water). I use about 1.5 oz lanolin to 16 oz. alcohol. Shake well and spray a zip loc bag with 4 or 5 sprays for 50 to 75 cases. Way cheaper than Dillon which has the same ingredients.

DO NOT TRY ethyl alcohol (or denatured alcohol or everclear), the lanolin will not dissolve. I wasted $16 worth of lanolin and $20 worth of alcohol trying to get it to work. IT WON'T

One thing about using 99 pc is that if you go too thin,, you can spray twice as much and it will evaporate fast.

And………

It has to be liquid lanolin,, too much wax and fat in the anhydrous to dissolve.

And…….

Liquid lanolin doesn't have any water in it,, it's not water soluble.
It takes more than alcohol to dissolve the wax/fat in the anhydrous.

And……..

I got a bottle if liquid lanolin at Whole Foods not long back, and without heating the alcohol mixed with the lanolin just by pouring it in and giving a couple of shakes.
After spraying the cases,,they dry in about 60 seconds or less. I don't think there's water in mine.

Correct, most often anhydrous lanolin is found in the solid form, and most liquid lanolins are hydrous; they have the waxy crystals removed and have water added (possibly with an emulsifier to keep the water in solution) but there are a few suppliers of anhydrous, liquid lanolin. It is where they remove the waxy crystals, but do not add the water. It is in my opinion that this lanolin is better because it should go into solution easier (if you use the right alcohol) and there is no water so it should dry rapidly on the case and there is no chance that it will contain water which will reduce the lubricating properties.

Brass Case Lube (ONLY FOR, Lube Pad)

Ted and I, being rather frugal, prefer something outside the realm of reloading, namely GB (Gardner Bender) Wire-Aide, Wire Pulling Lubricant, (Part # 79-006). GB is available at most home center or electrical supply stores. It’s the same creamy, wax-based product as offered by the reloading companies. BUT, an entire quart of GB is less than $5.00! ($3.60 at Fleet Farm in the Twin Cities) As I said, Ted and I are frugal.

BTW..............Mr. Frog's formula has been tested (by others on this forum) and it works.

As for ME............I still have many cans of Dillon Spray to go through.

I still have two bottles of Dillon lube left as well, just finding something else to play with. I seen mention of the other alcohol's not working so I guess I will need to get some 99% Iso before starting to make a mixture. I also have a 2oz bottle of the RCBS pad lube, can anyone confirm that this is indeed liquid lanolin?

Watch what kind of lanolin you get. I've got a 1lb tub of anhydrous lanolin that I'm going to be using to swage bullets with once I get the 99% alcohol in. hydrous lanolin contains a lot of water and takes more to mix.

I'm going to start reloading and this is a good thread to learn about the homemade case lube.

I do know how to make medicated creams and stuff like that.  What you do to emulsify the alcohol and fats is add a little polysorbate (can be 80 viscosity) to get the alcohol and fats to mix and not separate.

Has anyone tried that?  Seems like it would make a more stable solution?

Polysorbate is available at alot of places.  It's a common emulsifier.

Also, why couldn't you use mineral oil in the place of lanolin?

ETA:  With the polysorbate, the alcohol and any oil should mix to a combined, stable solution.
