Looking for help on deciding which scope setup to get for my 1895g .47-70.... Looking for a guide setup with a forward mounted 1x4 scope. I believe I'll need to mount a rail. The gun is a JM stamped 1895g with the 18" ported barrel. How much of a hassle will this setup be?

Anyway if that's what you have XS sight systems makes one of the most popular rail systems for what you want to do with your rifle.

You know you need a extended eye relief scope for that set up,which is no big deal you just have to order the right scope.
Edit-Some guys also like that rail but instead of a traditional scope they put a Red Dot Scope.I have been tempted to put one on my lever rifles myself.

If you look at some of the threads in this section you will find plenty of different setups.  Good luck and nice rifle!!!

Edit 2 - I went with a traditional scope and mount and am very happy with it,just a pic so you can see some different options.

I've got the same rifle. As I use it for deer hunting in the big woods of northern WI, where shots are most likely to be under 75 yards, I went with a small & compact  receiver mounted, "shotgun" scope. 2.5X fixed power, 20mm objective, matte finish, with eye relief rated at 3-6". It's a BSA Deerhunter model... yea I know, cheap Chinese scope, but it works well for me, been on there through 4 deer seasons now with no problems. I own 3 of those scopes... others are on a Rem 742 carbine in .308, and a DPMS EBR I use for coyotes. No problems with any of them. Quick target acquisition with both-eyes-open shooting, with just enough magnification. No batteries to die in the cold, like with red-dots. And it's held up very well to the .45-70's recoil (it is designed to be used on a 12ga slug gun, so it should hold up).

I am getting set to mount the XS rail on my most recent 1895GBL with ghost rings.
Currently pondering a 2-7x scope, a fixed 4x scout scope or a red-dot.... Or a 1-4x....  Decisions, decisions...
