A couple years ago I won a Marlin XL7 at a banquet. Today, I went to show said firearm to my visiting daughter. I pulled the bolt back, looked into the magazine which was clear, closed the bolt and handed the gun to my daughter. She shouldered it, then handed it back. As I was walking the hall to return my XL7 to my gunsafe my finger apparently touched the trigger and "BANG"....
needless to say it scared the bejesus out of me and punched a .270 cal hole in my roof. Anyone ever heard of these rifles having extractor problems??? NEVER had a firearm discharge like that, especially after I checked it and my daughter confirmed that she saw me pull the bolt back and look for ammo in the mag otherwise she said that she never would have accepted it unless she saw me pull the bolt back. The round must have been stuck in the chamber and the extractor failed to pull it..

Happened to me several times with several different rifles(the stuck round, not the bang). Always visually check the chamber. Even in a gun store I'll check the chamber in whatever weapon myself after the clown behind the counter does. And really check it, you'll see some clowns in gunshops do the cursory glance but not really check.

Comes from dealing with a lot of old worn milsurp stuff that sometimes doesn't have an extractor at all!

Some are tough to see but it sure beats a extra hole in your kid or your own head......

I don't know about the XL7 but in some rifles if you chamber a round directly from the top rather than from the magazine, the extractor doesn't always grab the round correctly. I would expect a modern rifle to grab the rim no matter what but as you found out, doesn't always work that way.
