I purchased a Russian Capture K98 at my local cabelas last week and and really excited to strip some cosmoline and clean her up a bit

One question I have is in regards to a cleaning rod, this rifle did not come with one and I wanted to bring it back to the original look

I found cleaning rods, slings, and sight hoods Here

My question, do I need a 10 or 12" rod?  I'm guessing 10 as its a fairly short rifle, but just wanted to make sure

Thanks!

Well, the answer is it depends.  They used both sizes, and your rifle being a RC doesn't mean the stock came from the same year or make as your receiver did.  I think they changed around 41' or so, but i can't remember which rods go in which stock. I have forgotten (too many mil-surps will do that) Someone may let you know for sure later.

Best way to find out take a coat hanger, or stiff wire, and run it down the hole, that'll tell you.

Also as for a site hood, does your rifle have the slot for one??  Earlier war rifles did not.

The 10" rod would only be in a flat (not cupped style) buttplate stock. However, I believe they switched to the longer rod before they switched the buttplates, so it's still possible to have a flat buttplate stock that takes a 12" rod. If it's a flat plate, you'll have to measure it to be sure. Truthfully, I would measure it anyway, cuz I'm funny like that.

I have a cupped style butt-plate, its a mix-master gun, only the receiver and barrel match number wise, I'll see what I can do in the measuring aspect

Thanks for the advice!

yeah I think some of the 40s and 41s still had the shorter rod, as they hadnt totally transitioned, so regardless of the buttplate put a thin dowel or wire down there and measure about to where the front sight base is. just get a repro rod and call it good, the originals can be hard to identify to the untrained eye and cost you 1/4 of what that whole rifle cost ya....

I all depends on when you rifle was made , or especially in the case of russian refurb , when the stock was made.
The longer rods being fittted on post 39 rifles.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I ran a 91/30 rod down it last night and it was 8 from where it stopped to where the wood stock ends.....how far do I want the cleaning rod sticking out?  I assume I'll lose 1/2" or so with the threads, does the rod stick out passed the bayonet lug?

The receiver/barrel combo is a 1939, not sure on the stock yet

Gonna tear it down this weekend and remove some cosmoline and possible look at refinishing the stock, thinking of going with Linseed Oil, any other suggestions?

I'll make sure to post lots of pictures when I'm done

I think you need the 12" rod. It should stick out beyond the bayonet lug and end at about the center of the front sight.
