I have a Reolink NVR and 8 cameras. (all POE) It has 6TB of storage, and I like the mobile app well enough. Overall I've been pretty happy with it. I am now looking to add another camera, but according to Reolink with the NVR I have I am able to add more cameras, but only able to record 8 channels. This leaves me with the option of buying the 16 channel Reolink NVR, or make my own NVR that is PC based. I actually have a full tower i7 PC laying around that is not in use, and was wondering if anyone has migrated their setup in a similar manner to a PC based system. My main question is what is the best software to run when doing this? I looked at Blue Iris and Frigate, but reviews and opinions are all over the place. Not really interested in all of the "AI" type motion detection etc... I prefer just to add storage and record 24/7 like my current NVR does. (I think I am getting a week+with 6tb of storage, and don't mind adding more). I don't need to archive the footage, just be able to review it within a reasonable amount of time if need be. My main concern is having something that the app works fluidly on and that my wife can easily use on her Apple phone, while also working on my android phone. ETA: I already have multiple separate POE switches to power all of the cameras, I never use the built in ports on these NVR's after them being the main failure point across multiple brand of NVRs Any advice is appreciated. |

I have the Reolink RLN36 NVR. It has one lan port and supports 36 cameras/channels. I have a 16 port POE switch near the NVR and an 8 port POE switch in the detached garage. I was going to use a PC with BlueIris but the price and storage expandability of the RLN36 sold me. You can add storage up to three 16TB drives. I had to buy the storage either way and the $150 price of the NVR was too good to pass up. It is currently recording 19 POE cameras . With 30TB storage it gives me about 3 weeks retention. https://reolink.com/product/rln36/ |

Rather than connect my switches to the POE ports on the back? If so this is exactly what I need. |
