I want to change my model 70 .300 win mag to something smaller. Obviously I could do a .257 bee. But I was thinking more like a .270 or  25-06. So, yes a barrel change is a must. But the .300 was developed on a .375 H&H. So rim size/ bolt face is much larger. So, I guess is what I am wondering is will a bolt from a .270 fit in my .300? Or, can't this be done? I am thinking for what I would have into a rebuild shouldn't be a ton using the .300 as a donor. If that's possible.

Cheapest just to replace the rifle.

I thought about that. But, a simple barrel change and bolt change if possible should be around  $600 I would think. Even is 700. Still most decent  rifles I like are just starting at 800. And with a Hart, lilja, krieger, Pacnor or Douglas I know it would end up being a shooter in the end. Most likely would go to a 25-06.

You'll have a hell of a time finding a bolt.

The 7mm Rem Mag has a 0.532 bolt face, so that's an option.

Your best (quickest) bet is to sit down with a reloading manual to find alternate cartridges with the same rim diameter.  Cartridges of the World would probably turn up a wildcat.

How about a 6, .25, or 6.5 WSM?  (Check the body diameter to make sure there's a chance the cartridges will feed from the magazine.)

How about loading it down with a fast powder and lightweight bullets?  It's not as elegant a solution but far cheaper.

You can get a brand new M70 for $700 with tax. Meanwhile a PAC-Nor barrel is as cheap as it gets at $600 installed and a bolt will run you $200 if you can find one.

New? Used? CRF, CRPF or PF?

As I looked more into it my options is limited cost wise. For $750 I can have the action trued and such with a new barrel for $750 from Krieger. But, that would be in a .257 bee or .264 win mag. Chances finding a bolt for the older 1976 model reasonable would be maybe impossible. So, I have to decide of I want to go that route. Now for my next question. Anyone know anything about the thompson Icon and if it is a big deal to change callibers within the same group? For instance .243 to a 260 rem or 6.5 creedmoor to a 260 rem. I know basically the same on the last. But, for hunting deer I love my .260 700 mountian rifle. And I like to have two guns same caliber when I go hunting. Only have to bring one kind of ammo then. And if guns gets dropped or something you have a back up with the same ammo. Beside the .260 rem has more factory loads to chose from. Thanks for the input on the first part. And any help on this last part.

NIB, blued, CRF featherweight.

The store sold off the guns that don't sell in Alaska for 40% off. Who is going to buy a blued rifle when stainless is available?  Also, I don't know why, but 300 Winchester does not have much flash anymore.
