What is the best way to mount optics to the Ptr-91 and what other accessorry Upgrades are there.  With the price of G3 mags I cant not have a G3 so it looks like I am going to be blowing my budget in the next month or so.  I am thinking about a PTR-91K

There are several ways to mount optics.

What kind of optic set up are you planning?

1. Aimpoint-There are several mounts for the Aimpoint/Eotech type of sights.
B&T mounts-DSA B&T mounts

2. Long rang scope- There are mounts from HK, ARMS and copies like the Tapco claw mount. The HK and ARMS mounts are pricey, but the copy made by Tapco is, IMO, just as good and a fraction of the cost-Tapco Claw mount

Or the B&T mounts- DSA B&T G3/CETME mounts

The downside, and it's a small one depending on you, is that the claw mount sits high on the rifle. Thus you may need a cheekpiece. Also some find the length of pull to short with a factory stock, thus needing an extension.

The cheekpiece and extesion can be found here-Brasscatchers stock extensions and cheekpieces Well made stuff.

Brugger and Thromet mounts from DSA have different heights, either a low mount, which is long, requiring you to notch the wide forearm, if you use it. And requires you remove the rear sight. Or a univerisal mount that sits higher allowing you to keep the rear sight on.

I have a B&T mount coming. It should be here tomorrow. Once I get it set up and a scope mounted I will post a pic for you...

Hope this helps..

Is it possible to mount an ACOG to a G3 type? I really want to keep the collapsible stock, if I can is the HK collapsible an all the way in or all the way out type or can you set it at different lengths like an AR type?  I shot a G3 and an HK 94 before but the G3 had a fixed and it was so long ago on the 94 I dont remember hpw the collapsible functioned.  The 308 will be to supplement my SHTF arsenal I need something with a little more eumph past 300 yards and that can punch through walls better than 5.56 but I still want it to be manuverable and be easy to transport which is why I am looking at the K version

Oh yea...you would be able to mount a ACOG with any of the set-ups...

Although I have not used a ACOG on a HK/Clone...I would say that if it was me, I would go for a B&T mount with the collapsible stock....

There are also cheekpieces out there, sorry no link, for the collapsible stocks, when using a scope mount...

As long as the ACOG has a Weaver/Picatinny mount, you can use it...

The HK Collapsible stock and the clone copies of it, have 2 setting-all the way and extended...there was some talk in the forum, a few months back, about taking a dremel tool and cutting or filing new notches for different lengths.

I don't know if anyone did it, but I don't see why you could not do it yourself...if I was to do it, I would get a POF stock from either POF-parts or RTG Internationl. They are cheaper than a factory HK stock and look just the same..in fact all the POF parts are made on licensed HK tooling in Pakistan.

Here is a new cheekpiece I found RTG- Cherokee Cheekpiece

The furniture must go.  I finally found a used wide black forarm and got the POF butt stock.  MUCH BETTER.

Other than that, I haven't modified anything.  My rifle is definitely NOT accurate enough to even consider adding an optic.

not accuate enough for an optic? What level of accuracy are you getting?  I dont consider comabt type optics necessarily being for accuracy but rather speed and Target ID provided they have magnification. I use optics also to extend my shooting hours in the last hour of day light I can not see Irons at all. A good optic can be used well after sunset.

I'm getting 4 MOA.  The Flash out of this gun is too big for any kind of effective night fighting. (my rifle is a preban with no flash hider)  I personally don't use optics on any of my guns.  I prefer a weapon mounted light.

4 MOA damn....... thats pretty crappy is that the level of accuracy I can expect from any PTR-91, are there other more accurate HK Clones 4 would work I guess but I hate to go over 3 MOA with 2 being alot better.  at 400 yards you better do everything right if you want 100% hit rate on humanoid targets.  What type of ammmo are using could this be a factor?

I'm getting better than 4 MOA outa my PTR...about 2.5-3.5 at 100yds, depending on ammo...

My PTR is plenty accurate for me and optics...high end optics? No...no Lupy M3-M4, but more than accurate for a Tasco Super Sniper or such...

I know it's not a bolt gun and no flash hider does not bother me...

I'm certain that I could hit what I need to hit at extended ranges...not surgical, but to get the job done....

Outa all the clones of the 91 that I have owned, this the PTR is most accurate one I have owned...

4 minutes was about run of the mill for us guys that were in on the first batches of rifles.  I've read guys who are getting as good as 2 minutes on the newer guns.

Who knows?

I like the LACK of a flash hider.  The monster flash is really cool looking, and I just use my gun to pound gongs out to 200 yards.  It's a blast to shoot!

I heard that too...except mine is in the 200 range of serial numbers...I dunno...maybe mine was a fluke...

I have yet to find the lack of the flash hider a hinderance....yet that is..

Have you shot any LC 308 thru yours?  The Flash it huge!  It's awesome if you fire any around sunset.

I did, but in the daylight...

The best ammo I have found for it was the surplus Aussie 144gr...it out shot the LC, not only in mine, but in a buddy's PTR as well....

2MOA or 3 MOA would be find I could reliably hit humanoid targets out to 500 yards I would not hesitate to put an ACOG on a 3 moa rifle.  Though I think I would go with one of the cheaper models I could find.  I got my TA-11 used on the EE for 750 I think it was and its perfect  I was going to get a BAR-10 or a FAL but with the Price of the PTR and the price of G3 mags I can do what I want for alot less with the PTR now if I can get a PTR-91KP with the Desert Mirage camo Ill be set

If your choice of firearm is dictated by the price of magazines, I really think you should look into the FAL instead.  The setup is more conventional and more user friendly in terms of optics.

not solely by Mag prices, but I am a Mag whore (in training anyways)  and want something cheap to stock up on mags G3 mags at 2 bucks a pop is about the cheapest thing out there

Accuracy seems to be a mixed bag on these.mine w/open sights @ 50yds

Thats with an IGF MB and Portugese ammo.Serial # in the high 700 range.

That makes me feel better.

I bought one of the 600 serial # range PTR's and had problems with it hitting about a foot right at 50 yds even with full sight adjustment.   I Ordered a JLD 24" barrel and had it cut to 20" and threaded before having it mounted.   I added a williams set trigger, PSG-1 stock, ARMS mount, Ergo grip, and IOR Valdada 2.5-10 X 42 scope.    That improved things considerably, this 10 round group was fired at 200 yards and measured 3"
