Does anyone know if there is an upgrade to the "elevator" on the 930..??
every time I load up the mag tube my thumb gets caught by it... In This thread someone mentioned a replacement part, cant find anything online on it though.. Thanks |
| The way I over come this is I form my thumb into an "L-shape" when I load the shell so that the nail end pushes the shell in the tube and the knuckle keeps my thumb (because it's too thick) from getting caught in that notch. The knuckle will push the lift gate up and out of the way. It takes a little practice to get down. The FN SLP has the same problem and many people weld more metal on the lift gate to close the gap (then polish with dremmel). If I ever get competetive with my 930, I'll consider taking mine to a smith to have it done. |

Thanx for replying, I've heard of some people doing that, was hoping there would be a drop in replacement out there by now though.. (kinda like the charging handle) Anyone else have any info..?? |

I had the same problem with mine and after seeing numerous images of people radically modifying theirs, I took the dreaded dremel to it. The problem with the factory part is that the groove is more of a "V" shape rather than a "U". Also that there are two sharp ridges at the top of the "V" (pointing up towards the top of the shotgun) that act like fishhooks on your thumb. I went in with a round bit and just ground out a small radius at the bottom of the groove and also smoothed out the ridges on the top. I dressed all of the edges with a file and then Skotchbrite pad and now all of the surfaces are buttery and you have to try reallly hard for it to bite you. (i.e. twist your thumb in at a severe angle.)
Reliability is the same and it will process anything I feed it. Probably a 15 minute job. YMMV. |

I get around by using the old Gunsite loading method where you push the round up into the loading port with the L shape previously described. The round is basically held between my thumb and forefinger. Push the round up into the loading port. The base of the round fits against my thumb and my forefinger kid of curls around and holds the round in position while I push forward with my thumb. The knuckle on my thumb pushes the lifter up at the same time. The knuckle on my forefinger indexes on the bottom of the receiver just forward of the loading port (this is why I modified my forearm) and the tip of my thumb finishes pushing the bas of the round into the mag tube and past the latches. The upward pressure keeps the loading port from biting my thumb.
Now that Miculek, Flanigan, and a bunch of others are going 3 gun with the 930 expect to see a lot of gamer stuff become available. I've seen an easy loader on one, so I would imagine that will be coming out before too long, and Benny Hill in Corpus is supposed to start putting out some guns that are modified as well when he gets them worked out. |

I just brought a 930 SPX home. I decided to practice weak hand reloads from a belt carrier and the lifter bit me after stuffing the first shell. My first thought was to weld up the U shaped gap that acts like a Japanese finger trap with teeth but decided to look for other options. I was hoping to find a replacement lifter or mod that would keep the lifter in the up position while the gun is being loaded when I came across this thread.

Nice mod 93, so what material is it? I need to find a local who can TIG on some material on mine. It was just some rusted up scrap I had lying in the garage that I cleaned it up with a wire wheel. I think it is 14 gauge. I traced the cut out of the lifter onto it then rough cut to shape with a hack saw and used a file to work down to the line leaving some extra length as well. If I would have used some thinner tungsten it would have turned out much nicer. When I gave it enough pedal to make a nice directed arc it melted the metal way to fast. At any rate I have been practicing weak hand reloads from a side caddy and it is so much nicer. I have *not* been pinched once and due to the lighter springs I can load it faster than my 870. |

Well it is fuggly but it is fixed and functional so I am a happy camper. No more getting thumb caught in the trap http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/medium/DSC_4475.JPG Reminds me of my favorite saying: "It ain't pretty but it works!" :) |

Dear god, just picked mine up last night. Shot it and cleaned it today. Can they make that little link pin between the bolt carrier and the little "tail thingy" and freaking smaller and easier to fall out. Just spent half an hour on the floor looking for it with memories of the first AR lower I built with the front detent incident. Headed to a shotgun course this weekend at Tiger Valley in Waco. Will try to post of a review of my thoughts on the 930 when I get back |

Looking forward to your report. I am seriously considering a Mossberg 930 SPX for use in 3 gun. I know there are a lot of opinions about the Mossberg and other semi autos on these forums but always interested in recent experiences, As well as shooting experience.........Definitely let us know if you have any trouble getting thumb caught in ramp. Thanks! |
| I'm using a regular 930 that I cut down for my 3 gun shotty. I love it. I actually prefer the ribbed barrel and bead front. I cut it down, threaded a new bead, and had it threaded for chokes. Then added an extended tube and some sling mounts. Only thing left for me to do is get the lifter welded to help with my fat fingers. I do find the bent thumb helps alot but I'd rather not get it cut when I'm getting to fast for my fingers to keep up. |
