I'm about to get the process going for purchasing a Class 3, but have a question.

There is a chance that during the waiting period, I will move (but still within the same state.)

What does this mean?  Do I need to tell the ATF that I've moved, or will the paperwork go to my FFL and it will just be business as usual?

if you are buying on a form 4 and you are moving in state you are fine I did this last year the form will be sent to the dealer.

What if you move out of state but the new state is still NFA friendly?

That'd be a problem, because unless you somehow maintained dual residency, you couldn't go pick up the NFA firearm in your old state after moving to your new state.

If the window was short enough that you were able to keep your old ID and lie on the 4473 that you were still a resident of OldState (though you'd already moved to NewState), then you could pick it up, and then submit a 5320.20 for a permanent move to NewState.

Unless you also had someplace in OldState to store the NFA item until the .20 was approved, or the item was a suppressor or AOW, you'd be violating federal law by taking it to your residence in NewState before transportation paperwork was approved an in hand.

Would a friendly NFA dealer do that?  They're storing it for the length of time it takes to get the approval anyway, I'm not sure how long it takes to get the .20 processed.

Also: I visited an NFA dealer today and he confirmed, he'll get the call when the BATFE paperwork goes through.

He'll get the stamp, not a call, but could then give you a call.

The kicker is not the dealer storing it for you, it's the being able to fill out the 4473 to get it from that dealer if you're now a resident of NewState.  The 4 weeks or so to get .20 approved probably isn't a dealbreaker as long as you can still legally get it from the dealer in the first place.

If you're calling the ATF to check on your status, you could even submit your .20 as soon as the stamp has been approved, even if you don't have it in hand.  Probably safest to send it with a return address at the dealer's, so it'll be coming from your old state, and you'll have travel paperwork in hand for when you go pick it up.

What about a form 1? I have my trust in place and funds ready to go for a suppressor and to SBR my 9mm AR, but will almost certainly be moving (within the state but to another town) in 3 to 6 months.

moving within the state is fine. If the move is out of state and the new state is NFA friendly you would have to get a hold of ATF and dealer to cancel the form 4 and have the dealer form 3 it to a dealer in the new state. Then start the form 4 process all over again
