I'm really really new with H&K rifles. I was just curious... If i were to buy a mp5 clone, would it be considered a SBR? and if it is a sbr i have to go thru ATF to obtain forms and approval right? also does anyone know of any good mp5 clones other than bobcat and vector? thanks! |

They follow the same rules--it won't be considered an SBR unless the barrel length is under 16 inches. So, some are, some are not. It just depends if the gun had any work on it or not to shorten the barrel. Most straight from manufactuer are not SBRs. Bobcat's BW-5 and BW-5 FS both come standard with a 16.5 inch barrel (the FS has a fake suppressor that lengthens the barrel to make it legal). An unaltered HK-94 is not a SBR either, since the barrel length is 16.5 inches. Some "HK types" are actually pistols, and are not considered SBRs. If I am correct, they cannot be fited with a stock or they become illegal. If anyone knows different, please let me know. Yes, you do have to get ATF approval to own a SBR. It will also cost $200 on top of the cost to do paperwork (photos, fingerprints) and if any transfer fees are needed. I am currently waiting on the ATF for mine. Sort of a hassle at first, but well worth it IMO. My MP5 is a Bobcat. It does have the occassional FTE problem, but other than that (which can be fixed) it is a joy to shoot. The fit and finish is on par with a real HK as well. And it was 1G under the going rate for a HK94. I can't speak for Vector, but I've read good things. If I were you, I'd stick with either of these clones, or get a real HK94. Either way, SBR it since you are in TX. Stay away from Vulcan--they aren't made well and don't have the HK operating system. |
HMC is spot on. Good gouge. ARCAPTN |
