I read threads from last year that said that ATF would approve multi-caliber, multi-length Form 1 for SBRs, (even putting "varied" on the form)
BUT recent posts make me feel like they stopped doing that and require a specific caliber and length.

Anyone with recent (last 6 months) experience clue me in??

ETA: if they do require a specified length and caliber, can I just send them a letter updading the registry later when I get other uppers?

Yes, they do require specific barrel length and caliber. Yes, after approval, you can send them a letter stating all possible configs that will be used.

Is this letter for INFO ONLY?  Or will the ATF need to respond before you proceed with changing the barrel length and caliber?  Will a new tax stamp be issued with the updated changes?

I talked to them over the phone and they told me all you need to do is:
-Put specific barrel length on the form 1
-Enclose with the Form 1 a separate letter that includes a statement as to what other calibers and barrel lengths you plan on using. (I also included name, location, make/model, & serial #)

I already have a approved Form 1/tax stamp with 5.56 (caliber) and 7.3 (barrel length).  So this should suffice as the "specific barrel length on the form 1", right?

Now all I need to do is submit a separate letter indicating the other calibers/lengths desired.  I probably should send a copy of my approved form 1 also.

I hope I understood that correctly
Thanks.

I don't think you'd need to send an extra copy of your form 1. But yes, from what I understand all you need to do is send the statement. Give 'em a call just to make sure.

What do you put for OAL?

for reference, I received a form 1 last week that had 4 calibers listed on the form itself.
22lr/9mm/45acp/.223

So they are approving multi-caliber forms.
For barrel length I just put 7 inch.
Figure if I had the 11inch on it, I would be safe..
Not that anyone could really say anything since it was already registered as a SBR

The overall length of the firearm described on the form-1... take your existing rifle, some masking tape, and a tape measure and go at it.
