I saw a video on the web that looks like an actual gem tech guy or something.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ycp1jmdgIQ where the guy mentioned that one could use the .308 can for mullti use on the 5.56 as well. Has anyone on this site done this before? I own a 308 and a few 5.56s so this would be good for me if it is actually quiets as good as the can designed for 5.56 so if anyone has done this please chime in. By the way I plan to shoot subsonics in the 5.56. Have the cash and the wife is on board with buying one so I am looking and researching before deciding on what to buy. Also would have to only pay tax stamp one time and use on two different calibers. Thanks! |
| Yes guys are doing it all the time. There are a couple of down sides to doing this in that the .308 silencers are not typically as quiet on a 5.56 as the 5.56 silencers are they are also, typically, heavier than the 5.56. The issue in the that the bore needs to be smaller than that bullet you are using. After that the silencer needs to be able to handle the pressures of the round you are wanting to use. You are so need to make sure that you have away to mount it correctly .308 and 5.56 rifles are typically threaded differently. |
I run a YHM Phantom .30 cal on a WASR-10 7.62x39mm (factory 14x1LH threads were fine), a 20" A2 5.56mm, and a 10.5" SBR 5.56mm without any complaints. I liked YHM's variety of thread adapters, and it's easily interchangeable (while the suppressor's cold at least )
Pics are in this forum in several threads, but I will repost on request. |

repost As you wish http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn228/emeraldwlf/YHMSilencer001.jpg http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn228/emeraldwlf/YHMSilencer004.jpg http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn228/emeraldwlf/SBRChristmas.jpg looks great! how noticeable is the suppression difference between your 308 can on a 5.56 vs a can made for 5.56? imma venture a guess that its not too bad. i've wondered about this before cuz warranties dont really work out for cans under 10.5", but if you used a 308 can for a 5.56 with 7.5" barrel, that would hypothetically reduce the possibility of a baffle strike...right? but then theres the whole warranty thing... what to do.. |
| I have both the YHM 556 and 762 cans. From the shooter's perspective, they sound basically the same to me on a 556 rifle. They also both sound AWESOME with subsonic .223. In fact I just bought a 308 Scout from Griffin Armament because I know a 30 cal can works so well on 556 rifles. When that one finally gets approved (gonna be a few months...) It will pull double duty on my Savage 17hmr. |
