Okay guys, help me out here . . . please!
I absolutely HATE putting a question out there like this . . . but I'd NOT been thinking about getting a suppressor - not really anyway! However, it suddenly looks like I have a real opportunity to get one - if I act quickly. See, we're getting a loan which a property sale will take care of in a few months, but here money laying around tends to get spent - and, given how many projects need to be addressed, I believe I can "afford" to get one now w/o my wife taking too much notice: nor, having a fit! (I'm not really trying to HIDE it, per se. But, if I wait, odds are I won't have another opportunity - not like this, anyway - and only God knows when it would be!) To the point: I have a DPMS-made R-25 with a Vortex hider on it. The rifle has an aluminum free-float system w/20" barrel and, to me, the thing is heavy as hell! Being disabled (terrible back problems), weight is super-important - yet, versatility is as well. (I have three AR's, too - any one of which I'd like to be able to suppress - when shooting at home, especially [I DO understand it won't be as effective as a dedicated 5.56/.223 can would be. That's okay.]) Obviously, trying to educate myself with so little time is a non-starter, so I could really use some help. My FFL-buddy/gunsmith has a dealer who will cut us a break - money-wise (three other guys are getting 'em, too - though, NOT in 7.62) but, even so, I'll only have $600 - $800 to spend (plus, the stamp, of course). We'll be going to see him in about a week. Please . . . what quality QD can(s) can I expect to get in that price range and with the other requirements I'm setting? I'm not sure what all the dealer sells. But, if you guys can help me out with some info/suggestions, it'll help immensely - and I'll be a whole lot more confident when I go in to place the order. Thanks a lot! I really appreciate whatever help you all can provide! (Sorry for the urgency - and my ignorance on the subject!) |

Thanks for the replies, folks!
But, I THINK I just discovered a snag . . ! Not a deal-breaker, but . . . am I correct that if I want to use a can on different weapons, I MUST have the same, suppressor-specific, flash-hider on each rifle on which I intend to use the can?!? Either that, or I'm out of luck - so far as switching between calibers is concerned. Is that right? (Of course, I just spent a boat-load: putting Vortexes on 'em - the .308, especially!)
Heheheheee . . ! That'll just figure! And, I guess it just goes to show my ignorance - and the unwelcome surprises you get when you try to cram information into your brain, last-minute! ETA: Following the link, I see that every-damn-one of what I need is out of stock! G-R-E-A-T-! That's freakin' typical.

| Why don't you make a plan to come by my place? You can try out the various YHM cans on different configuration rifles and see if they will work for you. If you and your friends decide to buy a couple of cans I can probably get you a good deal through my dealer connection. Drop me an IM. |
| If you can get an AAC 762 SD or a good price and most importantly IN STOCK I would as it is lighter, otherwise, the YHM will serve you well. Each rifle will use it's own mount but the mounts are made so that you can put the 30 cal can on the 223 but not the other way around. |

I'd read that about the 7.62 vs .223 mounts and not being able to make a mistake by putting on the smaller can on a larger rifle . . . that's a great feature. Smart. My buddy (the one I'd mentioned in the original post) is saying he's had real good luck with his Gemtechs over the years - although, he's never seen/used the HVT. I read somewhere that guys were having serious POI problems with the HVT, though . . . thoughts/experiences? My buddy ALSO says his dealer-friend has had it with ACC - that their CS sux and they hire idiot kids straight out of tech-school who spend most of the day throwing nerf footballs around the plant - basically just fucking off all the time - and they never deliver when/as promised, etc, etc. (His words. Not mine.) The guy won't even deal with them anymore. Oh! I'm now joe-average civilian(!), so the can is truly for "recreational use". But, durability is still super-important. I take it that all the major mfgr's cans can take being dropped or bashed against the occasional tree and what have you - right? (Besides, who knows what the future may hold?!? teotwawki? Eh?) QD mounts are all sturdy and secure and won't screw up anything inside the unit . . . ? And for the record . . . I find myself getting strangely excited: thinking 'bout all this . . ! |

Yep, heavy as crap...but versatile. Heavy is subjective. The .30 Phantom weighs 27.2oz according to Titsworth's tests on silencerresearch.com. The AAC 762SD weighed 19.5oz. The group of .30 cans tested ranged in weight from 14.6oz to 42.8oz with the heaviest can being the most expensive and the quietest. |

I can't say anything bad about AAC's customer service. Mike Mers responded in <24hrs to my question and answered it superbly. The POI is repeatable now(tighten it and loosen to the last notch it will catch in ) that I know what to do, it is quiet, light, and very well made.
I wouldn't go with what a friends dealer said I guess. My dealer told me that a customer ordered a can with a weird thread pitch for .308 I think it was 1/2 x 28 and when the supressor came in he mounted it, put the can on, and shot it. Well, AAC grabbed the wrong adapter supposedly and sent a .223 adapter. He then tried to tell me that the resulting can and gun explosion was AAC's fault and that they wouldn't do anything about it. Even if true what kind of moron puts something on a barrel without checking if the hole is big enough?!? The dealer said mine was the last one he would buy from AAC but I don't care I like it and an extra 1/2lb hanging off the end of my rifle (AR or bolt gun) is more than I want when they do the SAME THING. I also want to get the Blackout muzzle brake for my bolt gun which means AAC is/was the only option as YHM doesn't/didn't make one that I am aware of. I'm just saying do your own research and ignore what the dealers tell you. The markup on YHM over AAC is supposedt to be much greater so it's no wonder a dealer would try to sell you one over the other. In the end you pay you money and take your chances anyway and I'd be willing to bet that AAC will be around longer with all of their military/leo contracts than YHM. My next can will be an Ops. Inc 12th Model  |

I agree there might be something more going on with the dealer and ACC. I don't know. BUT, I DO know I'm going to be getting a break monetarily and I've not got a whole lot to spend: relatively speaking anyway. My goal is to come in around a grand INCLUDING the stamp. (Although, that might prove impossible - IF I decide to go the ACC route and go with another dealer [Which I may do. It depends.].)
The POI problems I'd mentioned earlier were reportedly with the Gemtech HVT. None of you guys have any comments or experience so far as that can is concerned I guess (based on facta non verba please)? The thread I saw that at ("Sniper's Hide") was almost a year old, so I don't know if the issue has been resolved. I'd sure LIKE to know, though! Come to think of it . . . most all the sites I looked at had most every damn can BACKORDERED or out of stock! Anybody in/around south central PA? (I sent you an IM, jlficken. Haven't heard back, though.)
*Again, thanks for the input. It's tough - trying to wrap my mind around so much info, prior to placing an order. I sure don't want to make a decision I'll regret later. Like I said, this has kinda' come up w/o much notice and I guarantee that if I wait, it won't happen! (Some of you guys have wives too I'll bet . . !) On the upside though, having ANY decent suppressor is better than having none - and HAVING one will be a godsend in so many ways! Although my 8 acre property borders another 40 - and that one borders around 200 acres of farmland, I'm being encroached upon on the OTHER three sides! And I'll tell ya' what . . . I absolutely HATE my neighbors knowing my business (especially now-a-days)! Being suppressed will be a big plus. Besides, a couple of the neighbors ARE real nice, but getting a little "long in the tooth", so to speak, and I don't like the idea that I'm bothering or disturbing them while I'm blasting (which has been quite a bit, lately). I'll feel MUCH better with a whisper-quiet "pop" coming from my rifles - being softened even more by the trees! That's for sure! |

Well... it won't be whisper with regular 5.56mm/.308, but they'll think you switched to more .22LR Keep us posted. Almost as exciting as when I got my first can Actually, I just got off the phone with a trusted friend who highly recommends the GEMTECH HVT. Well . . . he really , REALLY like the Shurefire! But, he says it's NOT twice as effective for twice the price! He says though, that he has a couple HVT's and their predecessor, the TPRS, as well as YHM's. He says the HVT is significantly quieter than the YHM and that he likes the way the HVT mounts the weapon much more. He says to that POI shift is much less, too, and that it's consistent, repeatable and predictable - and for practically the same $$$'s, he'd go with the HVT. What say you guys? Agree? |
|
Well, for those of you interested . . . I placed my order tonight.
I went with the HVT - after looking carefully at specs and db ratings provided by the dealer (who sells 'em all, btw). I got a damn fine deal on the can. But, since he did me so well on that, I let him rape me on the other two flash-hiders I ordered (to put it on 2 of my AR's). I'm not going to say what I paid - cuz the dealer frequents arfcom AND because he DID cut me (and my buddy who was with me - ordering THREE!) one helluva' break. But, I'll say I paid $90 each for the other Phantom-style hiders. I SHOULD mention, though, to - that he's looking into getting me Vortex-styled hiders instead. I didn't know they were available for Gemtechs, but I'm super-happy to have discovered they were! I am beyond impressed with the two I have (1 for 5.56, 1 for 7.62). The can SHOULD be in, inside of 6 weeks - and, of course, we're hoping it'll be on the sooner side. (!) He says too that 6 - 8 weeks ATF turn-around time isn't unheard of any longer. So . . . boy! That'd be great! I'll be sure to follow up on this thread and let you all know how it goes. Needless to say, placing the order made my heart skip a beat! This is my first suppressor, so I'm pretty excited to get everything said and done . . .! Thanks again for all the advice and input. I tell ya' . . . . it'll be a real pleasure to be a member of the NFA "club"! LOL C-ya in a few weeks - with a range-report too, no doubt! |
