This followed me home from the gun show today. This is my first and think I got a pretty good deal on it at 1500.00 OTD.

Any pointers or advise for this noob from the M1/M14 guru's would be greatly appreciated.

Go the 44Mag.com and get some 20 round CMI mags.

That's what I paid for a new one with a black synthetic stock a couple of months ago. These guns aren't getting any cheaper. I went the old school route and put a USGI walnut stock and flash hider on mine.

M1As can be as addictive as AR15s.

I'm  already finding this out.

I was thinking how much better it would look with a wood stock .. where did you get yours and how much did you pay?

I got the stock from Numrich's with all the metal for $60.

The handguard is from Boyd's.

Your M1A was about $200 less than what I paid for mine (picking it up next Monday). I know I paid too much but, I called all the fun stores around here and this was the best price. Mine is exactly like yours with the OD green stock and it came with 1 10round and 1 20 round magazine. I went to 44mag and ordered a bunch more 20 rounders.

I would recommend picking up 2 books from Scott Duff dealing with M14's / M1A's. They can be found on their website, Brownell's, Amazon, etc. I have both of them coming as I am a total noob to the M1A as well.

Not knocking this site and the fine members here by any means, but check out http://m14tfl.com. It's a nice supplement site for learning about the M1A.

ATG has a nice selection of .308 ammo. Pick up a few boxes of each to see what shoots best in yours. American Eagle also makes a 168gr round specific to the M1A's (A76251M1A). I ordered some from Cabela's to try out.

And on the subject of ammo, be sure to check out my post at http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=6&t=299499 if you haven't already.

Have fun and enjoy your new M1A!

Does the stock and handguard match? I've been thinking about taking off the OD green stock and going to wood.

That is a very nice looking rifle ... sounds like you got a good deal. Guess I will have to do some shopping I'm not really thrilled with the OD synthetic stock. I have already ordered 2 - 20round mags from 44mag they seem to have the best prices. What tools would you guys recommend .. do I really need the Springfield multi-tool? or should I just order the whole cleaning kit? Thanks to all for the info.

Congratulations.   This weekend I bought by first from a gun show in the Houston area, Loaded Stainless with Walnut stock, $1695+tx.  It's a beauty.   (will post pictures latter).   Looking to accessorize with the basics soon.    The whole magazine thing is not so fun.    Bought one 20 rounder at the gun show as well and think it was possible I was taken.   Claimed it was a Winchester from a canceled contract to Israel.   So far what I have read, doesn't seem to match up with what it should be.  Going to post that as well to get the opinion of the forum.

Think I will have to pick up a couple from 44mag.com this week.

Keep us posted on accessories you decide to go with.

Hopefully one with more experience with M1A's will chime in, but I'm a firm believer of you can never have too many tools. Especially odd ones such as specific armorer's tools.

That said ... This is what I have coming for my M1A.

From Brownells:
ratchet chamber brush (084-140-486)
bore guide for attached suppressor (022-100-014)
bolt roller greaser (093-223-025)
gas cylinder wrench (054-214-000)
gas piston drill bit (054-114-000)
broken shell extractor (080-000-530)
m14 Complete Assembly Guide (261-000-006)
m14 Owner's Guide (261-114-003)

Brownells also carries a bunch of M1A specific tools at http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/cid=382/k=/t=S/Products/M14___M1A___M1_Tools but I don't know yet exactly what I'm going to need/use. I need to read the two above books from Scott Duff first.

I'm getting the buttstock cleaning kit from ebay which includes the multi-tool.

In closing, I know this is a new M1A, but I feel like I owe it to learn as much as possible about it and treat it with the respect it and its variants have earned over the years. Kind of like how I felt when I picked up our M1911 which was made in 1918.

Might I suggest "The Last Steel Warrior" as THE history of the M14. Lots of info, lots of tips and you'll never regret buying and owning it.

Congrats on the M1a, I'd sell off a lot of other guns before I'd turn loose with a couple of mine.

Congrats!  Nice looking weapon!  Get some 20's from 44mag, and a lugged flash hider.  I also much prefer the look of a wood stock on an M14 as well, but that's just me.

The Boyds handguard comes unfinished. You have to stain it to match your stock. I've got mine close but I would like it to be a little bit darker. Also it is a little fat so some sanding is necessary, especially near the gas tube.

New guy checking in,

I just traded for this on the EE, with 4 Mags.

I used to have an M21 and a super-match my dad got to try and get me into matches but things never fell together not that i wasn't willing. Those sold a few years back and i wanted to get a long range shooter.

I'm already thinking about putting it on a Mod 0 stock with larue 608 mount, i'm pretty sure i have a leupold with .308 mildot somewhere. Thats only if i don't find a nice wood or syn stock with an adjustable comb for cheap. Believe i ahve some extras stashed form the other guns somewhere.

Dang, that asking price almost has me ready to sell my Devine built [ inc bedded with a NM CA barrel] M1A.

yea i don't think it was worth all that much but who knows, i know my factory m21 sold for like 21 or 2200. The way i look at it is i wanted a .308 or .50 that could shoot anywhere out to 1000y. Its gotta be more useful than the gun im traded for it. If i was sweeping buildings the semi auto ump might be handy but im more of a hunter the range and power of a .45 wasn't gonna do it.

I really wanted to go yesterday but think I am going to order the cleaning kit first before I do that. I want to be able to clean it after shooting it. Besides .. I am still waiting on the 20 round mags I ordered from 44mag. But it is hard to resist the temptation to just go.

Why?

The great thing about an M1A is the excellent irons.  Plenty effective on man-sized or deer-sized targets out to 500 meters.

If you want a 308 for scoping, get something other than an M14.  Get an AR-10 or DPMS.

Run a boresnake through it a couple times and shoot the piss out of it...after you are done, snake it a couple times with CLP.

Won't hurt a thing.

Since M1A's require cleaning from the muzzle, there are probably more damaged from OVER-cleaning than from UNDER-cleaning.

Just make sure you have some grease on the roller, locking lugs, lug recesses, and op-rod guide.  M1As require GREASE, not oil.
