ATN Gen 2+. Any good? A PVS-14 is probably not in the budget, but I could probably put together $1,500 for what would really be a toy with possible SHTF applications. Are there better choices in the $1,000 to $1,500 range?

You should be able to buy a gen 3 PVS-7 or a gen-3 PVS14A (no manual gain control) or other gen3 monocular here on the equipment exchange with that kind of money.

The PVS7 is not really what I'm thinking of, prefer a monocular. How much of a disadvantage in not having manual gain control?

Through use in the military and the 7 PVS14s I've built... I could give a fuck about manual gain...

So $1,500 is a realistic budget for one in your opinion?

For sure it is. You can pick up a PVS 14 kit on the EE for $650 that will have everything except the intensifier tube, then you have $850 to hunt down a gen 3 tube with. Easily attainable.

You should be able to grab an assembled AB (micro, pitbull) with an Anvis tube for 1500, thats about what I paid for mine on the EE. Just got to keep an eye out. the deals are out there.

If your on Facebook look up the "night vision gear" group. Seen a few gen 3 units for $1500+ for sale. One guy has gen 3 pvs14's for $1750 and I think those units come with a small warranty.
